Oahu wardrobe stylist and public relations consultant Tyson Joines, 27, got his start in fashion interning at a local fashion publication and has been hooked ever since. With a keen eye for silhouettes and key pieces, the Mililani resident has styled celebrities such as singer Rachel Platten, who performed at the 2016 NFL Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium, Echosmith band members when they were in town last year to perform at The Republik, and Oscar-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden, among others. His Instagram feed is peppered with photos of himself posing alongside Jessica Alba, Chrissy Teigen and other stars.
Joines shared via email one of his go-to tricks for making sure the clothing he’s pulled for his clients is returned in pristine condition: taping feminine hygiene pads to the bottom of shoes so they don’t get scuffed during try-ons.
Favorite client
“My favorite client to work with over the years has to be (singer) Bruno Mars or (fashion model) Miranda Kerr. They’re both at the top of their game in their respective professions, and when you’re working with the best, it forces you to elevate your own game. Your wardrobe options aren’t as limited because you have the luxury of working directly with design houses to create custom one-of-a-kind pieces for the client.”
Event dressing
“As a stylist, I don’t enjoy getting dressed to the nines. I prefer a happy balance between casual and dressy, and I carry that with me no matter the event I’m attending. For example, I’ll wear a blazer or suit jacket to a black-tie event, but instead of wearing slacks with it, I’ll pair it with a dark wash straight-leg jean instead. A button-up shirt, forgo the tie. It’s all about having a happy medium and being comfortable in what you’re wearing.”
Shoe stopper
“The shoes I tend to gravitate to the most right now are a pair of Givenchy sandals that I just picked up from Saks Fifth Avenue. They’re open-toed black sandals with the typical silver chunky Givenchy chain straps with a zipper back. Originally it was an online order that got returned in the store and something the store never carried, so hopefully I picked up a one-of-a-kind piece.”
Top accessory
“I notice that my more conservative clients, who don’t necessarily feel comfortable pushing the boundaries with what they’re wearing, will tend to express themselves and gravitate to more exciting and daring handbags. It probably feels like less of a commitment because it’s not physically being worn on your body and can be swapped out easily.”
Fashion wish list
“Something I recently stumbled upon that I fell in love with was a silk robe at Dolce & Gabbana. Growing up and now living in Hawaii, loungewear isn’t a huge concept here. I’ve never invested in a robe before, but I might have to now!”
