Number 25 was never in doubt.
The OIA Division I title game at Aloha Stadium on Friday night went just like every other Kahuku game against a Hawaii opponent this season.
The Red Raiders dominated No. 4 Farrington and ran their undefeated streak to 23 games in the state with a 44-8 win over the Govs to claim their 25th OIA football championship.
Kahuku (10-1) rushed for 253 yards — in the first half — and quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava accounted for four touchdowns for the Red Raiders, who will turn their attention to defending their state title in the Open Division of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships beginning next Saturday.
“We ended up 1-0 for the week,” Kahuku coach Vavae Tata said. “We’re going to take the bye week, focus on academics and see who we play (in the state tournament). Still looking for the complete game.”
The game was called at 11:15 p.m. with 5:07 remaining on the game clock. Farrington receiver Mosi Afe was injured after an interception and remained down on the field.
As medical personnel tended to Afe, the referee announced the game had been called. An ambulance drove onto the field moments later and Afe was transported to a nearby hospital with a spinal injury.
“We threw the interception and one of the players did a blindside block on Mosi,” Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. “Those blindside blocks — that’s why they put the rule in. They are dangerous, but I think he’ll be OK. He was moving and he was talking, so that’s two good signs already.”
Kahuku running back Elvis Vakapuna finished with 158 rushing yards and a touchdown and Harmon Brown added 55 yards on 16 carries.
The Red Raiders rushed for 291 of their 419 total yards.
Maiava started the game with an 11-yard touchdown run and closed the first quarter with a 65-yard scoring scamper with no time on the clock to put Kahuku ahead 17-6.
The Red Raiders rushed the ball on 31 of 40 first-half plays but were efficient mixing in the pass. Maiava completed four of his first five throws and tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Pua Falemalu and a 52-yarder to receiver Royce Pao.
“(He’s) spectacular,” Kahuku senior safety Kesi Ah-Hoy said about Maiava. “He’s a freshman and he stepped up and is playing with so much maturity.”
Defensive back Kekaula Kaniho added a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter for his fourth pick-six in the last five games. Kahuku has scored 12 touchdowns on defense this season.
The Govs (8-3) scored just the second touchdown in the last 34 quarters allowed by Kahuku when running back Challen Faamatau, the state’s leading rusher coming in, scored on a 9-yard run late in the first quarter.
The score was set up by a Kahuku fumble that was recovered by defensive lineman Tainano Gaulua at the Red Raiders’ 13-yard line.
“I’m not really satisfied with the way we performed today, but there’s always room for improvement,” Faamatau said. “Today we made a bunch of mistakes, but they’re correctable.”
Farrington went into the wildcat formation with Faamatau at quarterback and he raced to the Govs’ sideline before turning it upfield for the scoring run.
Faamatau finished with 52 yards on 17 carries. Quarterbacks Bishop Rapoza and Justin Uahinui combined to finish 13-for-37 passing for 131 yards and two interceptions.
Maiava finished 6-for-10 for 128 yards.
