A critical accident on Dole Street closed part of the street near the University of Hawaii law school library this afternoon.

A 22-year-old man died after a moped collision near the University of Hawaii at Manoa this afternoon.

Paramedics took the man, who was not wearing a helmet, to the hospital with critical head injuries, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.

The two mopeds collided at about 1:45 p.m., EMS said.

Honolulu police closed Dole Street near the law school as traffic investigators examined the scene and reopened the road by about 4:15 p.m.

Police said two mopeds were traveling Diamond Head on Dole Street. One moped stopped for a pedestrian, and the second moped ran into the first, police said. The driver of the second moped died, police said.

Mopeds need to be better regulated. The potential for serious injuries demands it. Another problem in some parts of Honolulu is the large number of bicyclists who ignore all traffic laws as they speed along sidewalks filled with pedestrians, many of them elderly. It’s only a matter of time before a serious accident will occur.

      and skateboarders….

    • inverse says:

In this case, sounds like one moped was going straight Koko head bound on Dole Street and another on Dole in the opposite direction going Ewa bound, and the Ewa bound moped tried to make a left into the pedestrian walkway fronting the Law School library entrance. Either that or switch it around and the moped was trying to make the left into the pedestrian walkway near Andrews outdoor theater. Of course mopeds should never use these pedestrian walkways to access either upper or lower UH Manoa campus and this is the reason why it is such a bad idea. Would hope the moped who is in critical condition is the one making the illegal left into the pedestrian walkway and the not the one just going straight.

Maybe if they had bike lanes to ride in the cyclists wouldn’t need to ride on the sidewalks? Build the bike lanes so they can have a reasonably safe place to ride… and then slap them with fines if they ride on the sidewalks.

      • tygah says:

There’s one on S. King St at Alapai St. But the bicyclists still ride on the sidewalk.

      • wn says:

Would be nice but like mixing oil and vinegar…mopeds and bicycles in a designated lane…a disaster in the making. However, if everyone observed simple rules of the road and common courtesy…it could work 🙂

        • runswithdascissors says:

Nobody said mopeds should use bike lanes. Someone brought up bicycles and I was referring to that. As for TWO-STROKE mopeds, they should be banned. Even India banned them. We’re more third world than India. Pathetic.

    • allie says:

agree..RIP. These motorized bikes are so unstable.

      • wn says:

Just to clarify, as a one who has rode bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles…all are unstable. However, if you apply proper riding techniques and precautions you can minimize being “unstable” (thhere are gyroscopic principals that keep you upright). For those who ride and have been thru a training class, they will probably agree about the importance of “lean and push or counter steering and looking into a turn” to maintain control in a turn. This is an example of technique (there are many others) which I practiced routinely…in my opinion. 🙂

    • krusha says:

Just require them to wears helmets. How many people will have to die before they finally pass a law? It’s like what happened before they forced drivers to wear seat belts.

  2. wrightj says:

Since mopeds are so loud, a vital sense is lost – hearing.

  3. runswithdascissors says:

When are our inept lawmakers going to grow some cajones and ban 2-stroke mopeds from this island? They are ridiculously loud, extremely dangerous and pollute more than a dozen fully loaded 18-wheeler trucks.

    • localguy says:

Banning 2-stroke mopeds from this island is not the answer. Would be typical of our utterly clueless bureaucrats who just can’t do their job.

Far better solution is to require them to have effective noise mufflers to reduce the exhaust noise. Oh wait, large motorcycles like Harley Davidson are even noisier.

      • runswithdascissors says:

LOL. The noise law has been in place since the 90’s braddah. Did absolutely diddly squat. These kids are just going to remove them the minute they are installed… or drill some pukas on the sides… you know… to make them as annoying as possible. Because that’s what kids do. They just need to ban these two-stroke people killers like the rest of the developed world has.

    • SHOPOHOLIC says:

      Our lawmakers. Ha!!

Rear seat seatbelt law but no helmets necessary and no need to secure your family when they’re all sitting in the BED of the pickup truck.

We’re living in Pigsknuckle Arkansas, island style…

As a biker, I am saddened by this loss. That said, there is a general problem with mopeds in that many (not all) riders treat them as whatever they want them to be – sometimes they are cars, sometimes they are bicycles, sometimes they are pedestrians riding down the sidewalk. The fact is they are motor vehicles, can only be on a roadway, and have to obey all traffic laws. The lack of licensing, regulation and enforcement in regards to mopeds is unlike any other city I have been in, which is probably why they are so much more popular here. I have been riding for forty years. I have been hit by a truck and a minivan, both turning into my path. I walked away uninjured from both. Please, folks, learn to ride defensively and wear armor, not a bikini and rubber slippers. It’ll save you when some other idiot ruins your day,

    • wn says:

Good recommendations. Yes, a helmet to prevent a skull fracture or facial scarring, armor or at least long sleeve shirt and pants to prevent “road rash”, ankle high riding shoes so you don’t rip off the flesh at the ankle bone if you do down. All the aforementioned have been experienced by acquaintances who now know better. Fortunately, all are still around 🙂

  5. roxie says:

I always see moped operators allow packing passengers when it is only made for one person….DANGEROUS!!!

  6. nuuanusam says:

22 year-old, too young to go!

  7. wn says:

Condolences to Family and Friends. These two may be part of the group that routinely makes it’s way up St Louis and turn left and onto Dole at a high rate of speed and back. I frequently drive on Dole and I believe the incident occurred near the stoplight/crosswalk fronting the law school & library…a bad location. The other two high-risk are Dole & East-West and further down Dole in front of the Hawaiian Studies (son t-boned a auto that made a left turn right in front of him…driver admitted fault). Other than these high risk locations the other factors I observe is simply reckless riding behavior, derestricted mopeds with stock brakes (?). Perhaps a nuisance but HPD has got to start enforcing basic rules of the road. Sad…

  8. SHOPOHOLIC says:

    Bloody inconvenient helmets!

    • wn says:

Agreed, however it is a minor inconvenience compared to the consequences of a head injury. My son was spared a catastrophic event if it were not for his helmet that was significantly damage as he was ejected from his motorcycle and landed and slide along the asphalt. While a moped may be at lower rate of speed…it doesn’t take much to fracture your skull. Aside from the aforementioned, a proper fitting helmet and perhaps a skull cap may help relieve the discomfort along with just getting used to wearing a helmet…just saying.

      • jasurace says:

In fact, the primary injury a helmet protects against is the fall from standing height to the pavement. It’s hard to appreciate how hard concrete is versus dirt. Worst part in Hawaii about wearing the helmet is “helmet hair”!

        • wn says:

Thanks for drawing attention to wearing a helmet. My experience in healthcare really makes it so real to understand how a simple “knock” on the head can create so much damage. Again, thanks for drawing attention to this. 🙂
