At long last, elect Hillary Clinton
Few election seasons in the nation’s history have been as brutal and ugly as the one that will end Nov. 8 with the election of the 45th president of the United States. And few alive today can recall a time when the country was as divided and in need of healing as it is now.
Without a doubt, both the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, and Democrat Hillary Clinton are flawed candidates for the most powerful office in the world.
But an election is a choice, and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser believes the choice is clear: Voters should send Hillary Clinton to the White House.
This conclusion is evident despite Clinton’s past stumbles. Most notably these include practices as secretary of state that exhibited her penchant for secrecy, particularly concerning emails she had directed to her own private server.
And regarding the work of the international charity, the Clinton Foundation, she still has not dealt sufficiently with questions about influence held by donors with State Department dealings.
The result: If she is elected, Clinton will face a public trust deficit she must work to overcome with transparency not forced on her by WikiLeaks.

If anything, however, real estate executive and billionaire Trump has exhibited even more disturbing proclivities, including his irrationality, self-aggrandizing and reflex for divisiveness. If Clinton has been dissembling, Trump has contradicted himself outright throughout the campaign, and disturbingly, denigrates Americans across the nation’s diverse spectrum.
So if the voter is looking for an affirmative reason to pick Clinton, beyond Trump’s erratic and crude remarks, there is this: her superior capacity to do the job.
Clinton’s record of public service underscores what she could bring to the presidency, starting with her years as first lady and especially continuing through her two terms on Capitol Hill as a senator from New York.
Even after losing her campaign for health care reform in the early 1990s, she pushed instead for establishing the Children’s Health Insurance Program, an effort that involved Republican and Democratic forces on the Hill. And when she became a senator herself, she continued to work with members of both parties.
For those who question whether that inclination remains intact, Clinton throughout this campaign has courted Republican supporters. Meg Whitman, the executive who formerly sought the GOP nomination for the presidency, was a featured guest of Clinton’s at the last debate.
Trump shows no particular allegiance to the party he only recently joined, an independent streak his fans adore. But he has shown little deference to conventions of statesmanship, either, and increasingly, has sabotaged even small measures of goodwill along the campaign trail.
Even setting aside the appalling recorded statements on sexual behavior and the accusations from women, his rash assertions — about the legitimacy of the election, about the U.S. role in NATO, about nuclear proliferation, about welcoming hacking by Russia — all certify that he lacks the steady hand the presidency requires.
He is credited with business success — but there remain many unresolved questions, especially given his refusal to reveal his tax returns.
Supporters claim he can offset his lack of government experience by hiring the right team, but he’s shown little ability to keep advisers or the willingness to follow advice he’s been given throughout the campaign, let alone on knotty domestic and foreign affairs.
Someone who can’t resist going on offense against a former Miss Universe can’t be expected to apply diplomatic disciplines where they’re needed.
In her debate appearances, former Secretary of State Clinton demonstrates her command of current realities and a focused set of proposals. She is smart, with clear policies that mesh well with values of Hawaii voters; they should show their support at the ballot box. Clinton is prepared to serve, and has earned her way to a four-year term.
On Capitol Hill
The Star-Advertiser also endorses the Democratic slate for Congress and to the U.S. Senate. Brian Schatz has represented Hawaii well, advancing an agenda pursuing environmental goals and other progressive issues. Returning him to the Senate to join Sen. Mazie Hirono for a full term would be the optimal choice. Both have committee assignments that would work in the state’s favor should the Democrats take back control of the Senate, an advantage not to be ignored.
Far outpacing their GOP rivals, as well, are incumbent U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard; and Colleen Hanabusa, a former congresswoman who should fill the late Rep. Mark Takai’s seat then win a full term.
The state will be served by their experience, which is what Clinton also brings, in abundance, to the table.

Hillary for Prison. Dump Trump. Mickey Mouse for President.
I agree. The SA failed to mention that there are 3rd and 4th choices – the Johnson character and “none of the above”. I think they were way out of line selecting a criminal. They would also have been out of line by selecting a nut job.
The media slop-troughs job is to deceive, delete, edit out and spin for the Democrats.
Seems to me that Trump got an unprecedented amount of free press – in the Billions$$. Just that the PEOPLE despised what he had to say. So stop WHINING about the media.
Item of interest for the truth seekers…”It’s one thing for the right-wing press to accuse the Clinton foundation of cronyism, corruption, and scandal (especially if the facts, and internal admissions by affiliated employees, confirm as much) – it tends to be generally ignored by the broader, if left-leaning, media. But when the Watergate scandal’s Bob Woodward, associate editor at the liberal Washington Post, says very much the same, Hillary Clinton’s campaign has no choice but to notice. This is precisely what happened today when journalist Bob Woodward told a Fox News Sunday panel that the Clinton Foundation is “corrupt” and that Hillary Clinton has not answered for it.
Here, courtesy of RealClearPolitics, is the transcript of today’s exchange:
CHRIS WALLACE, FOX NEWS SUNDAY: Then there are the allegations about the Clinton Foundation and pay to play, which I asked Secretary Clinton about in the debate, and she turned into an attack on the Trump Foundation.
But, Bob, I want to go back to the conversation I was having with Robby Mook before. When — when you see what seems to be clear evidence that Clinton Foundation donors were being treated differently than non-donors in terms of access, when you see this new — new revelations about the $12 million deal between Hillary Clinton, the foundation, and the king of Morocco, are voters right to be troubled by this?
x
BOB WOODWARD, THE WASHINGTON POST: I — yes, it’s a — it’s corrupt. It’s — it’s a scandal. And she didn’t answer your question at all. And she turned to embrace the good work that the Clinton Foundation has done. And she has a case there. But the mixing of speech fees, the Clinton Foundation, and actions by the State Department, which she ran, are all intertwined and it’s corrupt. You know, I mean, you can’t just say it’s unsavory. But there’s no formal investigation going on now, and there are outs that they have.
But the election isn’t going to be decided on that. I mean Karl was making the point about this, I’m not going to observe the result of the election. I mean that’s — that’s absurd. I mean it has no consequence. If Trump loses, they’re not going to let him in the White House. He’s not going to have a transition team. And — and to focus on that, I think, is wrong. I think the issue is, what’s going to be the aftermath of this campaign.
So it’s corrupt, it’s a scandal, and… it will have no consequences at all. It’s time to look up the latest definition of Banana republic again.”
This was a typical endorsement for Hillary Clinton, just as we would expect from just one of thousands of other liberal minded and agenda driven-biased newspapers across the USA. The American media is now and has, for well over a generation, been comfortable in their liberal bias to the point they would argue they have no bias! That any belief, other than liberal policies, is “extreme” by their account. How typical (again) that the SA editorial board endorsed Hillary…but could hardly come up with any substantive specific accomplishments despite her 30 years of public service. The SA endorsement was actually another hit piece on Tump, where by word count, the editors spent more space on attacking Trump, than actually telling readers why Hillary was a better choice. But intellectually honest readers know full well, this isn’t about choosing Clinton or Trump. Its about what America will be for the next generation. Trump, as boorish as many would believe, represents the total outsider, the non-political choice. Trump is the only person in America today who has the ability to break the cycle of people like Clinton who is just another politician, that has lived well off the backs of taxpayers. Clinton will be just like Obama or worse. Not my opinion, but look at the facts of what this country and the world is like today. Want more?? Vote for Hillary. Want to stop politicians who amazingly, become millionaires while in office? Vote for Trump, a man who has found his own success. The American media is now, factually, in the tank for Clinton. Vote for Trump and take away the control the media has over the minds of average Americans.
Am I surprised the SA picked Hillary for President? Not at all!
Elect Hellary if you want 4 more years of O’blunder
Sure would prefer 4 more years of Obama to returning to the days of G W Bush. Sorry, but I don’t want to see the stock market back down to under 7000. Why do you? Are you shorting the market?
7000 was under Odummys watch earhole. STILL lying, as always.
Boots with his dishonesty again. The financial crisis caused by the banks which affected the stock market can be traced back to one Bill Clinton.
lol, typical republicans, Meathead and Keolu, sadly you just don’t know your history. Your hero, G W Bush had two economic meltdowns. The first one was relatively mild and happened after 9/11. The second one happened at the end of his term and was the worse economic slowdown since the great depression. Way to go republicans. lol
Yet again earhole, “at the end of his term”, the Democrats took over Congress in Ws last 2 years. Both House and Senate. Explain that one.
Bill Clinton signed the law that forced the “loose” and easier to qualify for loans that eventually led to the financial collapse.
10 years from now, boots will still be blaming GW Bush for current political issues.
Is that a promise? Well then she has my vote. lol
Why so surprised? She’s the most qualified.
Lock her up. HiLIARy lied and four men died. Where’s Vince Foster.
Sure beats your hero G W Bush where he lied and 4000 died. lol
Iraqi Liberation Act of 1998. Look it up you puppet. And who was president then?
Nope… these are right wing propaganda and lies.
Meathead, have we forgotten who actually launched the attack against Iraq? Hint: It was not Bill Clinton but that Republican hero, G W Bush who left the country with the worst economic meltdown since the great depression and a trillion plus budget deficit. Thanks a lot dumb republicans.
boots, now you’ve resorted to bold faced lies? Sad.
And what lie is that Keolu? Do you deny we were attacked on 9/11 or that many more died in the war that followed? Say are you still looking for those WMDs? lol Face it, GW only lied.
Why would anyone be surprised? They joined the vast majority of papers who have decided to endorse sweet Hillary. I think there is only something like 5 papers endorsing the Donald? Probably a thousand for Hillary. Pretty sad when even republican leaning papers have come out in support of Hillary.
Clinton is the most CORRUPT person who has EVER ran for President, Voting for her just because she is a women or has been in the public eye is NOT a good reason. SHE DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE PRESIDENT. SHE SHOULD BE IN JAIL 1
lol, there is that word most. How silly. Hillary is not my first choice but she certainly is not as corrupt as that republican hero, G W Bush or even the last republican president who actually did something, Richard Nixon, tricky Dick. (who gave us Obama care)
Trump is the most selfish candidate to run. He’s not for the people.
Lock her up. HiLIARy lied and four men died. Where’s Vince Foster.
With Ellvis.
Is Hillary “for the people”? When you review “Trump’s Contract with America”, would you say the “people” don’t benefit? Trump’s programs would help the average American. Do you disagree?
Of course… most economists say his policies will lead to an economic depression.
Yes, The Donald would just practice Voodoo with a vengeance. For example he would do away with the Estate tax which will subject most families to capital gains tax on property they inherit. Presently few are subject to it but with the Donald, most will be subject to capital gains. Thanks a lot republicans.
As more and more comes out on all the corruption in Washington DC. I’m afraid this isn’t just about the Clinton’s. This is what is uniting the democrat and Republican parties, against Trump to keep him out of office at all cost. He has become an independent catalyst willing to expose back door deals. The two parties keep getting rich off and leave office rich.
The money going into the pockets most likely is bigger the voters can even phantom. The lobbyist have proven one thing if nothing else. No politician is to big to buy looking at the people we have in Washington today at least. That goes for “BOTH PARTIES “. They have begin to feel like the untouchables and aren’t from it becoming a fact of life. Vote Donald J. Trump !
Hillary should have been indicted for her use of a personal email server to conduct official government business and to avoid FOIA. Obstruction of justice should also be thrown in.
Do the American people really want a liar, denier, and untrustworthy person in the White House? She and Bill left the White House in January 2001 dead broke. It’s now 15 years later and they are now worth $340+ million dollars.
IRT roadsterred and wazdat: I posted before reading both of your comments. You’re much more pithy. Good points. The rebuttals should be interesting (beyond the name calling).
As usual, the Star-Advertiser is in the pocket of the Democrats. You really should have followed the example of several big city newspapers on the mainland and endorsed Gary Johnson for President on the principle that both Clinton and Trump are unfit to serve as President.
The article sounds like it was written by Hillary’s campaign. I believe a more compelling article could be written supporting Trump’s candidacy. A few key points follow. Most important, without question Hillary is divisive. Her comment about half of Republicans being deplorable wasn’t just a “slip of the tongue”. She has referred to Republicans as the “enemy” on several occasions, following the pattern of the current administration. As a Senator, she accomplished little. She never did deliver jobs to upstate NY, in fact, jobs were lost. Even today she talks about “high paying jobs”, but never says how that will be accomplished, except by more government projects. We don’t need more cronyism and Solyndras. She was given the Senator seat. Anyone on the ballot in NY would win the seat because the State is heavily Democrat, just like CA, where the open Senate seat is being contested between two Democrats; Republicans don’t even bother running after 3-4 generations of open borders. Hillary’s work on healthcare with her husband’s administration was a complete failure, opposed by many, even in her own party. Finally, the pay for play politics has made the Clinton’s extremely rich, although she claims they were “flat broke” when they left the White House. How much of that process is legal? One more thing. You criticize Trump for not releasing his taxes. He would be an absolute fool to do so. He does not have the tax return of a politician or school teacher. He is responsible for the actions of thousands of individuals in his business, as he should be. The media would search and search, for something politically incorrect and hammer him every day, yet not investigate “pay for play” or deleting emails after they were requested by Congress.
I understand the State votes for the Democrat, but it would be more compelling, in my opinion, if you endorsed Clinton by giving her a slight edge, instead of a glaring review of Hillary, and an absolute awful review of Trump.
I have another word for “pay for play”. It’s called “bribery”.
Well of course the paper is going to endorse sweet Hillary. It is not like the SA is the only paper to do so. In fact if they had endorsed the Donald, they would be only among a handful of papers doing so. But by endorsing Hillary, they are just one of hundreds of papers doing so. Thanks Star Advertiser. Wouldn’t want to subscribe to a paper that picked an idi*t for president.
Guess you’re not voting for the idiot Hillary then. Definition of an idiot is someone that doesn’t know how to handle classified information after serving in a government position for 30 years. Anyone that has a security clearance that supports or endorses her should also lose their security clearance.
Well now that Hillary has the election in the bag, I might just vote for sweet Jill or Johnson. But I sure wouldn’t call Hillary an idiot. That is a better description for the Donald who make a complete mess of himself at that Catholic dinner. Shame the Donald has no class.
Endorsements count. We respect the SA because they put so much thought into their endorsements.
I notice in today’s paper that Caldwell has received his fifth Council endorsement by Ron Menor. Menor is one of our most ethical legislators. This means a lot.
Anyone who endorses clodwell should be voted out of office.
Definition of idi*t: Person that works for the government for 30 years and doesn’t know how to handle classified information. I guess you’re not voting for Hillary. Anyone that supports or endorses her and is currently working for the government need to have their security clearance terminated as well.
Trump is the idiot… we still haven’t seen his taxes. Probably he doesn’t to go to jail for cheating on his taxes.
How about you take the high road like Hillary and show the world your taxes then? It’s okay for her to donate money to her own non-profit and claim that as a write off yet Trump gets slammed for using the same tax code to avoid having to pay taxes. You think Hillary is going to close all those tax loopholes? Vote Wiliki for head gruber!
What does it say about the Democrats and the Republicans and Washington politics in genera… that Trump seems like a breath of fresh air by comparison?
Trump is a crook – a typical wize guy.
And Hillary is not? Is that what you’re inferring?
He cheats his creditors, his vendors, and govt.
Only when he eats the tic tacs
The Donald is nothing more than a conman. He should be in jail, not running for president.
TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT.
Vote for Gary Johnson!
Vote with a clear conscience by voting neither Trump or Clinton. There are two other candidates beside these two! Their chances are slim to none of winning but a person would feel and sleep better knowing a vote was cast for neither an elephant nor a donkey!
That’s assuming that you can live with your decision to let others decide for you.
IRT wiliki: If Hillary wins, will you be “ok” with open borders (more open than they are right now)? And if your answer is “yes”, do you believe Hawaii can absorb more refugees or immigrants from other countries? If you agree with Hillary’s policies, than should those immigrants be treated better, worse, or about the same as the current homeless in Hawaii. If we are able to take care of new immigrants, why can’t we resolve the homeless problem? Shouldn’t the homeless situation be resolved first?
Of couse Hawaii will welcome refugees… Gov Ige has alredy announced this a long time ago. We respect all those refugees who are fleeing tyranny in their home countries.
Who let you in? Typical lib free loader. Baaaa
Our choices:
Hillary Clinton, who never met a foreign donor she could refuse. CEO of the Clinton Foundation money laundry, operated insecure, illegal email server, promoted illegal Libyan war, withheld security from Benghazi, lied about cause of Benghazi attack.
Donald Trump, the coarse TV personality and con artist. Promoted fraudulent Trump University.
Gary Johnson. Pot-addled stoner. What’s a leppo? Phony Libertarian who supports anti-discrimination laws that require a Christian caterer to serve a gay marriage reception.
Jill Stein. “Green” like a watermelon (red on the inside). Says government needs to be MUCH more intrusive (read the platform).
Greece is a best-case scenario. More likely, Venezuela.
the right choice, the other guy is a crackpot, a bigot, tax cheat and sexual pervert.
Leave Bill Clinton out of this.
nope, that animal is trumpy, he is oink, oink. he realy looks and acts like one.
Stolen from a Trumpie’s wall. lol
Like many citizens, I’ve wondered and tried so hard to understand why Trump has such a remarkable following.
(It’s obvious why he shouldn’t!) Then a friend sent me this raccoon story. It makes no difference about your political leanings, this is just a good explanation of WHY… (Or it’s as good as any I can come up with).
Please, don’t reply with political rants from your side of the fence. This is not a message to support either party. It just helps understand how on earth Trump can remain so “popular.” You have to admit, it’s not easy to understand.
OK. To begin, a Republican writes a letter. Read on, even if you are a Democrat.
Dear Representative,
From the time I was able to vote I voted Republican. I am 70+ and have a great deal of respect and influence with hundreds of senior ballplayers who also network with thousands of others around the country.
I received your questionnaire and request for money to help support the Republican nominee for the office of the President. Rest assured, I strongly agree with every question as I have since Obama was elected.
Unfortunately, an important question that was missing was, “What have the Republicans and their Party done for the American people lately?” While you seem never to have listened to us in the past Forty Years, we gave you a majority in the house and senate two years ago and you have done nothing with the power we provided you. And Now, you want more of our
money?
You should be concerned about our votes not our money. You are the “establishment” and it’s apparent all you really want to do is to save your jobs and line your pockets. . . Well, guess what? It’s not going to happen. You can shake in your boots when I tell you our support is for TRUMP and he hasn’t asked for a dime.
You might think we are fools because you feel Trump is on a self-destruct course but you look outside DC and listen to the masses. Few, if any, have achieved what he has, especially in a state of New York .
If you really want to know how the majority of people feel, and this applies to both democrats and republicans, read below, it says it all.
Here comes the part about the raccoons:
You’ve been on vacation for two weeks, you come home, and your basement is infested with raccoons. Hundreds of rabid, messy, mean raccoons have overtaken your basement. You want them gone immediately. You call the city, the county and 4 different exterminators. Nobody can handle the job . . . But then you hear of one guy and this one guy guarantees to get rid of them. So you hire him. You don’t care if the guy smells, you don’t care if he cusses and swears, you don’t care if he’s an alcoholic,
you don’t care how many times he’s been married, you don’t care if he voted for Obama, you don’t care if he has plumber’s crack, you simply want those raccoons gone! You want your problem fixed! He’s the guy.
He’s the best. Period!
Back to Trump
Here’s why we want Trump. Yes he’s a bit of an ass, yes he’s an egomaniac, but we don’t care. The country is a mess because its politicians suck. The Republican Party is two-faced & gutless, and illegals are everywhere. We want it all fixed! We don’t care that Trump is crude, we don’t care that he insults people, we don’t care that he had been friendly with Hillary, we don’t care that he has changed positions, we don’t care that he’s been married 3 times, we don’t care that he fights with Megyn Kelly and Rosie O’Donnell, we don’t care that he doesn’t know the name of some Muslin terrorist.
This country is bankrupt and appears weak. Our enemies are making fun of us, we are being invaded by illegal’s, we are becoming a nation of victims
where every Tom, Ricardo and Hasid is a special group with special rights to a point where we don’t even recognize the country we were born and raised in. “AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED” and Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want.
We’re sick of our politicians, sick of the Republican Party, sick of Democratic Party and sick of illegal’s. We just want this thing fixed.
Trump may not be a saint, but doesn’t have lobbyist’s money holding him, he doesn’t have political correctness restraining him, all you know is that he has been very successful, a good negotiator. He has built a lot of
things. He’s also not a politician, not a cowardly politically correct
politician. And he not only says he can fix it, he says he will fix it and we believe him.
And we believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong or looked at and called a liar. Also we don’t care if the guy has bad hair.
We just want those raccoons gone, out of our house, NOW.
You are welcome to pass this on. I feel this is why hundreds of thousands of people that haven’t voted in 25 years are registering to vote this year.
The raccoons have got to go.
This is what it takes to elect a woman in America. Thank you to Honolulu Star-Advertiser for this wise endorsement. Trump’s latest drum-beating on media collusion/election rigging, etc. is designed to inspire “conspiracy theory.” This should be the last straw for undecided voters.
Hastily plead all you want, it won’t work well.
When Hillary bent over the flag-draped coffin of on of America’s fallen sons, then lied directly to his mother about the events concerning his death. When she did it with forethought and extreme malice – that is not just wrong. Nor is it just expedient. It is pure wicked to the core. Hillary lies, steals and destroys everything she touches. A vote for her is allowing her to profit from her falsehoods and wicked ways.
