If a zombie is your monster of choice this Halloween, look no further than your pantry and bathroom cabinet to help achieve a horrifying look. “Different things may be used that you have at home like oats and toilet paper,” said Hawaii Haunts makeup artist Parewhakaarahia Mahoni. Other inexpensive Halloween makeup needs can be found at drug stores.
To demonstrate, Mahoni applied zombie makeup to her brother Kamakana and Sadaraka for the Halloween festival the Mahoni family helped create in Kapolei this year. Here are step-by-step instructions:
Materials: liquid latex and simple Halloween makeup kit (available at drug stores and Halloween shops), regular makeup foundation, uncooked rolled oats, gelatin, toilet paper, water and a makeup brush for application
1. Apply liquid latex to face and let dry.
2. Mix one package of gelatin with 1/3 cup of water and microwave for 10-second intervals to achieve a gooey consistency. Dab on separate areas to create a base for scars and wounds.
3. Mix liquid latex and oats to create texture of rotting skin.
4. Layer small pieces of torn toilet paper and liquid latex on nose at preferred thickness. Set using a blow dryer on low setting.
5. Use a makeup sponge to dab on foundation then apply black and green makeup over scars and wounds and to create contours and shadows under the eyes and on cheekbones. (Add a drop or two of coconut oil for easier application.)
6. Add fake blood over wounds and use a makeup brush to splatter blood on clothes.
