Community donations are helping replace laptops and other equipment recently stolen from a Central Oahu school.
Police say 28 laptops, including 27 Chromebooks and a MacBook Pro, along with a projector were taken from Wahiawa Middle School on Sept. 28. No suspects have been arrested.
State Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz, who represents the area and attended the middle school, is helping facilitate donations through the Leilehua Alumni and Community Association to purchase new equipment for students. The nonprofit assists schools within the complex area.
As of Friday, donations for the effort totaled $2,500, Dela Cruz said. The stolen items are valued at $10,000, according to school officials.
Dela Cruz said he wanted to act quickly so students could have computers back in their classrooms.
“As schools move forward with an education based in science, technology, engineering and math, the right equipment is vital to building their skills,” he said.
Dela Cruz, who sits on the board of the Leilehua Alumni and Community Association, also plans to help organize a fundraising drive in hopes of replacing all of the stolen items.
To help with the project, contact Dela Cruz’s office at 586-6090 or Carolyn Hayashi, president of the Leilehua Alumni and Community Association, at 522-5133.
