The Rev. Michael Lapsley, founder of the Institute for Healing of Memories, will hold a three-day workshop next month that’s tailored for people who have experienced trauma.
The workshop is Nov. 11 at St. Anthony Retreat Center in Kalihi Valley. A $175 fee will cover lodging, food and workshop materials. Registration deadline is Nov. 1.
In the early 1970s, Lapsley, an Anglican priest in South Africa, spoke out against the apartheid government policy and was expelled from the country. He went on to serve as chaplain to the liberation movement in exile and was a member of the African National Congress.
In April 1990, while in Zimbabwe, Lapsley was sent a letter bomb from the South African regime. He was severely burned in the blast and lost both hands and the sight in one eye, according to a news release. In 1993 he returned to South Africa as chaplain of the Trauma Centre for Victims of Violence and Torture in Cape Town. There he devised the “Healing of Memories” process to help South Africans work through the psychological, spiritual and emotional effects tied to the nation’s past. In 1998 he formed the Institute for Healing of Memories.
