Question: What are some options for a professional who has recently been laid off?
Answer: Being laid off from a job can be a very stressful time; however, it’s also an opportunity to seek out a new industry or career path that a candidate may never have considered. Working with a staffing company or recruiter is a terrific way for a professional to have their resume available for jobs in their specific area of interest that may not be posted publicly. There are many online job boards where candidates can conduct targeted job searches; niche job boards with a college alma mater or professional association may also be helpful.

Q: What are some tools available for professionals who have been laid off to help them find work fast?
A: Fortunately, today’s job market is very favorable for candidates. Having internet access is crucial to quickly and easily casting a job search net. Resources include online job boards where candidates can subscribe to receiving email alerts for positions that match their specified field, location, and/or pay requirements. Staffing/recruitment agencies offer temporary, short-term and direct placement assignments, and member-only professional organizations often post industry-specific jobs that are only posted for their membership pool.
Q: Where can someone update their resume?
A: With so many resources and templates available online, creating or updating a resume shouldn’t be a daunting task. Depending on a candidate’s skills, work experience and education, a resume should be customized to best highlight his/her strengths and tailored for the specific company or industry. Certain online job boards can also help a candidate convert their work experience and education into a basic resume, from which they can expand and tailor for other job postings.
Q: If I am looking for employment, what are some events I can go to, to help network?
A: Job fairs are a great way to quickly get an idea of the types of companies that are recruiting and job opportunities that are available. Candidates should go to any job fair dressed professionally and prepared to submit their resume in case they speak with a recruiter. Working at a temporary assignment, joining professional association groups and networking through friends and family members are some other ways to make new connections — and possibly land a dream job. In a small state like Hawaii, where networking goes a long way, every interaction has potential to open new doors, personally and professionally.
Q: What are some common mistakes people make when they are laid off and looking for employment?
A: When faced with a layoff, candidates are often quick to accept the first job offer that comes their way. While financial considerations are often a factor, when it comes to new career opportunities, it’s important to research the market and the types of companies recruiting for a higher chance of long-term job satisfaction. This will help guide candidates to seek out employers that are a good fit for their “must-haves” (e.g., commute, schedule, compensation package, corporate culture) and better prepare them for interviews.
Key factors in any job search include an updated resume, company/industry research, and defining a concise narrative to share with prospective companies. And of course, follow-up is crucial.
