Arrest made, 1 of 2 missing dogs recovered

A terrier-mix dog named Pebble (left) was still missing this morning. But police and the Hawaiian Humane Society recovered a pit bull mix named Punu this morning.
A tip led to the arrest of a man found this morning with one of two dogs taken from the Hawaiian Humane Society on Tuesday.
The Humane Society said they recovered a pitbull mix named Punu after someone called the adoption shelter with a possible sighting of Punu and a terrier mix. Both dogs went missing from the shelter on Tuesday after a man had a “meet and greet” with Punu.
The humane society said after receiving the tip, police located a man with two dogs near Royal Elementary on Queen Emma Street this morning. A microchip scan identified Punu, but a smaller dog was determined not to be the terrier mix.
Officers arrested the man who had the dogs, but the Humane Society did not release his name nor did they say if it is the same man who was seen with Punu at the shelter.
The staff noticed that Punu and a terrier mix named Pebble were missing at about 7 p.m. while conducting a check of all the dogs before closing Tuesday.
Punu is 2 to 4 years old and Pebble is about 3 years old.

It’s sad how animals are mishandled / mistreated…I’m glad both were returned safe… 🙂
Re-read the story. Only ONE, the pitbull mix, has been returned safe. Humane Society better invest in security cameras and better locks. Would be interesting if the humane society would use their most vicious dogs to roam their property after hours as guard dogs that would bite the azz off anyone trying to steal other animals.
Not so sure the returned pit bull is safe. If no one adopts him, he will be put down by the humane society. He would have been better off with the person who
took him.
The reality is that only adoptable dogs are there. Hence, pretty certain dogs on display will be adopted.
Kiragirl, I love dogs. The reality is that fiveo is correct. Ironically the Humane Society is not quite humane and will euthanize many more than are adopted. Support the No Kill Shelters instead.
Did you know that the back gate of the Humane Society is unlocked and unmanned during hours of operation? If the worker/volunteer is distracted or called away, then…..
Max penalty for these people. Hope they find the terrier.
Hope it wasn’t those same homeless hungry guys of a couple of years ago…sigh
It just doesn’t make sense. For the amount of trouble and court fees, the thief should’ve just adopted the dog. That might not have been possible, if the perp was homeless. Then he should’ve just “hustled” on the streets for another pooch.
I think the thief was hoping to sell the dogs and make some money. Besides pictures of the dog, how about posting the booking photo of the person arrested? That is public information and you can put the comment “innocent until proven guilty” One thing in Hawaii people who commit serious crimes only rarely have their arrest picture posted or even on security video, HPD blurs the assailant’s face and then asks for the public’s help. On Oahu it appears serious and violent crimes are increasing but the police do not appear to be stepping up to meet the growing crime wave against law abiding citizens. Maybe its the court system but at least release security video showing the assailants face or post their arrest photo.
