Started four years ago by clothier Hawaii’s Finest Clothing, the festival began as an effort to restore island music and musicians by giving them a platform at Hawaii’s most storied venue, the Waikiki Shell. What started as a one-night event has expanded to three nights, with the first two devoted to island music — including reggae and Jawaiian music — and a third featuring traditional Hawaiian and contemporary artists.
Friday’s concert includes Kapena, recognized as island music innovators, along with Ho‘onu‘a, Three Plus, Opihi Pickers, Ekolu, Maui group Nuff Sedd, and Dani Girl. Saturday’s lineup includes pioneering island musician Fiji, pictured, along with Three Plus, Norm, Pati, Maoli and Koauka.
Sunday’s program is similarly star-studded, with Robert Cazimero, Makaha Sons, Amy Hanaialii, Weldon Kekauoha, Na Leo Pilimehana and Blayne Asing scheduled to perform with top hula halau.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Molokai High School athletic and academic programs.

The event will include more than 30 bikes displaying the eight classes of customized motorcycles: classic; chopper; cruiser; sport bike; everyday rider; cafe racer; bobber (for a bike that has had some pieces removed or modified, or “bobbed”); and bagger (for a Harley Davidson outfitted with saddlebags or similar gear).
“We’re bringing down the professional stunt riders who did stuff in movies like ‘Mission Impossible,’” said Javen Guzon, the founder of the show. One of those stunt riders will be Korta-T, a professional dirt bike rider who’s appeared in movies and music videos and has founded Bikes over Bang’n, an organization dedicated to getting troubled youth into motorcycle riding.
Though the sound and the fury created by motorcycles may seem like the point of the rally, it’s really aimed at promoting motorcycle safety, Guzon said, adding that Hawaii ranks third in the nation in motorcycle fatalities per capita. “It’s not just motorcycle riders riding safe, but also drivers that share the roadways with motorcyclists, they need to be aware of the motorcycles around them,” said Guzon, who rides a custom-built Harley.
The event will include music, food and a bikini show.

We’re not talking politics here. W.K., short for Wilkes-Krier, churned out hits like “Party Hard,” “We Want Fun,” “Fun Time” and “It’s Time to Party” over the past dozen years or so, earning the title “the king of partying” for the Vans Warped Tour in 2012. He was especially known for his high-energy, literally headbanging performance style, which often left him bleeding.
But he’s also found his voice giving speeches, dubbing himself a motivational speaker of sorts, though such evenings often begin with him at the piano — son of a college law professor and a violinist, he studied classical piano from age 4 — and end with a rousing singalong.
Among his first ventures in public speaking 10 years ago were a trio of three-hour lectures titled “The Joy Trilogy” in New York City and a discussion on “pure fun and total love” at South by Southwest, and his talks continue to plumb the idea of fun and release. He also preaches the power of positive partying in an advice column in the Village Voice.
His stop here is part of his Power of Partying tour, which will take him to all 50 states.
“This is not a political party rally, it’s a rally about partying with the political elements set aside,” he said in a release. “Without targeting or preaching to any one side, I want to see if we can party together in our common humanity.”

More than 30 animatronic dinosaurs, including models of Triceratops, Brontosaurus, and everyone’s favorite, Tyrannosaurus, will be on display at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. “They look real, they move their heads, they blink and they make noises,” said Jad Farran, manager of T-Rex Planet, the company bringing the dinosaur replicas. “They look very lifelike. Especially kids, when they see them, they go crazy. “If you’ve seen ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘Jurassic World,’ they’re just like that.”
Some of the animatronic dinosaurs can walk and will be available for rides, Arran said. A video documentary and an excavation demonstration will give the exhibit an educational touch, and bounce houses and other activities will be available for those who find the dinosaurs too much to handle. The exhibit was displayed at Windward Mall a couple of years ago, proving so popular that it was extended.
