About a third of the Honolulu Police Department’s fleet of blue-and-white sedans are included in a recall by Ford Motor Co. last month to replace faulty fuel pump control modules.
Affected are 114 of 350 Ford Interceptors purchased in 2014, according to HPD.
In an Aug. 24 news release, Ford said the fuel pump control module on the Interceptors could fail and cause engine problems. In some cases, an engine could stall and fail to restart without warning during driving, posing risk of crash, Ford said.
However, both Ford and HPD said they were not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the problem.
Ford said dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pump control module as needed at no cost.
Ford last month also issued a safety recall for approximately 86,000 2013-15 Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT vehicles with 3.5-liter gasoline turbocharged direct injection engines.
HPD will use some of its older cars while recalled cars are being inspected and repaired at local Ford dealerships.
The Ford Interceptor was chosen by HPD to replace the Crown Victoria, which Ford discontinued in 2012.
The city awarded a
$5.6 million contract in June 2013 to purchase 115 Interceptor sedans and 10 Interceptor SUVs. The sedans cost $44,866.66 each and the SUVs were $48,744.59 each.
