The Air Line Pilots Association, International recognized Hawaiian Airlines Capt. Charles Perkins on Friday with a Presidential Citation for his groundbreaking efforts to secure airline jump seats for off-duty airline pilots. The award was presented during ALPA’s 62nd Air Safety Forum in Washington, D.C.
For over a decade, Perkins has been a pilot volunteer on ALPA’s Hawaiian group’s Jumpseat Committee. Over the years, he worked on securing reciprocal jump-seat agreements between Hawaiian and various airlines, both domestic and international, in order to allow properly screened pilots and other airline personnel to sit in the jump seat of an airliner as long as the captain granted his or her permission.
Shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, severe restrictions were placed on the use of the cockpit jump seat on international flights. However, because jump-seat access is an important resource on which airline pilots depend for many reasons, including moving between home and base, Perkins refocused his efforts toward enhancing security screening standards to restore access to both domestic and international jump seats.

U.S. economy grew at 1.1% pace in spring
WASHINGTON >> The U.S. economy expanded at a sluggish 1.1 percent pace this spring as businesses sharply reduced their stockpiles of goods and spent less on new buildings and equipment. Yet most analysts forecast much faster growth in the summer and fall, fueled by healthy consumer spending.
Consumers offset the corporate cutbacks in the April-June quarter by spending at the fastest pace in six quarters, the Commerce Department said Friday. That suggests steady job growth and modest pay gains are making Americans more confident and willing to spend.
