Hawaii’s John John Florence beat out three surfers to reach the final of the Billabong Pro Tahiti, but fell to 11-time world champion Kelly Slater on Tuesday in Teahupo’o, Tahiti. Slater scored a 19.67 to overcome Florence’s 15.23.
Florence beat Joel Parkinson in Round 5, 18.30 to 15.90, and defeated Julian Wilson in the quarterfinals (17.34-16.60). He edged Brazil’s Gabriel Medina by a margin of 0.43 in the semifinals before facing Slater in the final heat.
Fellow Hawaii surfer Keanu Asing fell to Slater’s perfect 20 score in Round 5. It marked the ninth time a surfer has scored a perfect heat in 40 years of professional surfing.
Le clinches OCC Women’s Invitational
Kristen Le followed up last month’s win at the Waialae Women’s Invitational by defending her title at the Oahu Country Club Women’s Invitational on Tuesday.
Le, who has won at OCC all three years she has played (2012, ‘15 and ‘16), collected 76 Stableford points to capture the low-gross championship. She accumulated 39 points Monday and 37 more in the final round. Hyun Okita was overall low-net champion with 74 points.
The format awards one point for bogey, two for par, three for birdie and four for eagle.
Keilyn Ing (31—67), Le’s teammate at Santa Clara, was second in Championship Flight. She was followed by University of Hawaii senior Isabella Leung (32—64) and 13-year-old Grace Kyung Lee (33—63).
Flight winners were Akane Shimoko (A) with 65 net points, Beverley Grimmer (B) with 71 and Royce Sonnenberg (C) with 68.
