Honolulu firefighters put out two small smoldering fires at Waikiki hotels Friday.
Police closed Kalia Road in Waikiki between Ala Moana Boulevard and the Hale Koa Hotel because of a small smoldering fire coming from the roof of the second-floor mezzanine level of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
Fire officials said smoke was coming from a generator exhaust system on the roof near the Tapa Tower.
In the other fire, firefighters needed only a bucket of water to douse smoldering embers and cool off an electrical motor belt in the ventilation system of the Pacific Beach Hotel’s fifth-floor kitchen Friday morning.
Eight companies with 30 firefighters responded to the fire reported in the kitchen of the hotel on Kalakaua Avenue. The 837-room hotel was evacuated while firefighters sought the source of the smoke. Guests were allowed to return after half an hour.
The cause of the electrical fire is under investigation.
