Dan Schemmel has been hired as the University of Hawaii swimming and diving program’s head coach, the school announced Monday.
Schemmel, an assistant coach at Wisconsin the past five years, takes over for Victor Wales, who resigned following last season after 11 years leading the UH men’s and women’s swimming programs. Mike Brown remains the program’s head diving coach.
“I was impressed with the pool of candidates that we had and Dan stood out among them all,” UH athletic director David Matlin said in a statement from the school. “Our swimming and diving program is a source of pride for our community and we look forward to Dan’s leadership, taking us to new heights both academically and athletically.”
Wisconsin’s men’s team placed in the top 20 at the NCAA championships twice during Schemmel’s tenure as an assistant, finishing 18th in March. The 2008 Michigan State graduate also spent one year as an assistant with the Spartans and was previously a volunteer assistant at Arizona.
“I’m immensely honored and grateful to be joining the Hawaii family,” Schemmel said in the release. “I want to express my sincerest gratitude to David Matlin and the rest of the staff for their trust in me to lead this program.”
Schemmel takes over a UH program that placed second in women’s standings and fourth in the men’s competition at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships in February. The Rainbow Wahine claimed the school’s first MPSF team title in 2015.
UH’s associate head coach Jennifer Buffin also has resigned to take the head coaching job at Oregon State.
