A 25-year-old Kihei woman survived a nearly 60-foot fall into Iao Stream on Sunday and was hospitalized in serious condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Fire officials said the woman was hiking with a friend on a trail off of Iao Valley Road when she slipped, slid down an embankment and disappeared over the edge of a cliff into Iao Stream at about 4 p.m.
Firefighters climbed down the slope and found the woman at the bottom of a steep slope. The last 20 feet was a vertical drop to the bank of the stream, fire officials said.
The victim was conscious and complained of pain in her leg and back, fire officials said. Crews stabilized her injuries and hauled her in a rescue basket up the cliff by ropes.
It took about 16 firefighters, police officers and state Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement officers to pull the woman back up the cliff to Iao Valley Road.
