A representative from the South by Southwest conference and festival is in the islands to meet with Hawaii’s musicians and producers, filmmakers and digital/tech professionals who might be interested in participating in the Austin, Texas, event.
South by Southwest, also known as SXSW, takes place March 10-19. It includes extensive programming for creative content professionals interested in global trends in music, digital/tech and film/TV.
Upcoming Hawaii meet-and-greets will take place at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Sheraton Keahou Kona Resort on Hawaii island and 5:30 p.m. July 26 at Hawaiian Brian’s, 1680 Kapiolani Blvd., in Honolulu. They are free events but RSVP is required.
The Pacific region representative for SXSW, Phil Tripp, will conduct the sessions.
“Hawaiian artists have featured in the past few years — Anuhea, HAPA, Irie Love, Jake Shimabukuro, John Cruz, Mike Love, Mr. Carmack, One Right Turn, Pimpbot, David Tamaoko and the Green as examples,” Tripp said. “And leading companies have attended as delegates — Occupop, the Hawaiian International Film Festival, Pow! Wow!, Lux, Wremix, eHawaii.gov, the Maui County Film Office, Makaha Studios and WorldSound are among 100 others.
“We want to open SXSW more to the rich variety of talent from the islands — musical, digital and film/TV — hence these meetings, including both invited veterans and potential first-timers.”
Hawaii sent more than
40 delegates to SXSW in 2016.
