Police and prison officials are investigating the death Sunday morning of an inmate who was treated in his cell after having trouble breathing.
Department of Public Safety officials said they do not believe there was foul play involved in the death of Kahiwa Li, 28, who was awaiting a burglary trial.
An autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death.
Oahu Community Correctional Center staff said Li was having trouble breathing at 5:50 a.m.
Medical staff went to his aid. However, he stopped breathing and became unresponsive, and lifesaving measures were initiated until paramedics arrived to take over. He was pronounced dead at 6:45 a.m.
Li’s previous convictions were for misdemeanor and petty misdemeanor crimes for drug violation, trespassing and theft, according to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center.
