WAIANAE >> Manu O Ke Kai was in the home surf of the hottest club in Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a on Saturday, so odds were against a victory and beverages tasting better afterward.

Manu O Ke Kai won eight events, including seven of the last 20, in calm conditions at Maili Beach Park to end Na Keiki O Ka Mo‘i’s five-regatta win streak in the AAA Division (25 or more crews).

“Quite honestly it makes the beer taste better at the end of the day,” said Manu O Ke Kai paddler Daniel Aitchison, who was on the winning men senior and men open 4 crews. “We’re just looking at ourselves as a team to better ourselves and if we win, it’s a bonus.”

Manu O Ke Kai also won the women 65, men 55, men 50, women novice A, men freshman and mixed 40 events.

Manu O Ke Kai finished with 77 points, Na Keiki O Ka Mo‘i, the host club, had 75 and Kaneohe tallied 58. Points are awarded on a 5-3-2-1 basis.

Manu O Ke Kai and Na Keiki O Ka Mo‘i were tied entering the mixed 40 race — event 41 of 42. Manu O Ke Kai won the half-mile race in 4:28.34, while Na Keiki O Ka Mo‘i finished second in 4:40.85. Neither team scored any points in the final event.

“I was pretty surprised at the mixed 40,” said Manu O Ke Kai men’s coach Paki Lagunte, who also paddled on the winning men senior and men open 4 crews. “They did really good and normally they don’t really do that good. So good for them and everybody else.”

Manu O Ke Kai finished runner-up to Na Keiki O Ka Mo‘i in the previous two regattas, losing by 10 and 12 points.

“We might have just gotten lucky,” Lagunte said. “It’s tough with these guys, they’re the club everyone wants to model themselves after. The way they run it, it’s a tight ship. They got it together, they fill all the slots.”

Waikiki Beach Boys won the AA division (13-24) with 46 points and Kamehameha claimed the A division (up to 12) with 20.

The I Mua boys 13 is the lone undefeated crew in the association.

I Mua moved to 7-0 this season after winning its quarter-mile race in 2:20.27, more than seven seconds ahead of runner-up Kalihi Kai.

“It feels pretty good. It takes a lot of hard work to get there, though,” said I Mua boys 13 crew member Riley Barretto. “It’s really fun and hard work really pays off. We don’t really want to take it for granted because you never know, you might lose.”

The Ka Mamalahoe girls 16 crew knocked Kamehameha from the ranks of the unbeatens by winning its half-mile race in 5:03.27. Manu O Ke Kai (5:12.02) actually finished second ahead of Kamehameha (5:12.45).

“We’ve been trying to beat them, we’ve been placing second a majority of the season,” said Kiara Eltagonde of Ka Mamalahoe girls 16. ‘We’re right behind (Kamehameha). Every week we get closer and closer to their time. It was a big relief we beat them.”

Eltagonde added Ka Mamalahoe made its move on Kamehameha midway through the race.

“Going down into the turn, we were kind of behind, but coming out of the turn we kind of came out earlier and we were up with them and we were like, ‘We’re up, let’s go, push it, push it, push it,’ ” she said.

Waikiki Beach Boys won the prestigious senior women race in 14:24.34 and Manu O Ke Kai claimed the men senior race in 11:57.71. They are the only races that are a mile and a half.

The final regular-season Hui Wa‘a regatta will be hosted by the Waikiki Beach Boys at Waikiki Beach next Saturday. The Hui Wa‘a championship is the following week at Keehi Lagoon.

“Hopefully, we can keep the ball rolling through the end of the season and going into distance (regatta season). The main thing was to get everyone closer.”
