Hawaii’s John John Florence advanced to today’s quarterfinals after winning two heats on Saturday at the J-Bay Open at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
Florence eliminated Hawaii’s Dusty Payne in Round 3, 14.83-13.93, then won his Round 4 heat with a 17.43 over South Africa’s Jordy Smith (15.43) and Josh Kerr of Australia (11.77). Also in Round 3, Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz was eliminated by Tahiti’s Michel Bourez 14.67-11.28.
Florence is the lone Hawaii surfer left in the Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour’s sixth stop. He will face Smith in today’s opening quarterfinal.
Men’s U-21 advances to championship
The U.S. men’s junior national team swept Canada on Saturday to advance to today’s championship match of the U21 NORCECA Continental Volleyball Championship in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.
University of Hawaii sophomore setter Joe Worsley played in Sets 2 and 3 of the 25-9, 26-24, 25-21 semifinal victory. Rainbow Warrior incoming freshman hitter Austin Matautia did not play.
The U.S. will face Cuba for the title. Cuba swept Guatemala in Saturday’s other semifinal.
U.S. women fall in PanAm Cup semifinals
Puerto Rico handed the U.S. its first loss of the XV Women’s Pan American Cup, winning 3-1 in a semifinal on Saturday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The 25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20 victory at Ricardo Arias Gymnasium puts Puerto Rico into the championship match for the first time. The U.S. will play Cuba for the bronze medal today.
University of Hawaii senior opposite Nikki Taylor finished with five kills when playing in all four sets, starting in Set 4.
Hawaii’s Murray named PCCL All-Star
Tyler Murray, a catcher for the University of Hawaii, was selected to the Pacific Coast Collegiate League All-Star Game roster. The game is scheduled to take place in San Bernadino, Calif., on Tuesday.
Murray is hitting .325 with five doubles, two home runs, 18 RBIs and 15 runs in 23 games for the Corona Adrenaline.
Murray redshirted the 2016 season due to a preseason injury and will be a second-year freshman this fall.
Silva to be next speaker at QB Club
Motivational speaker and Saint Louis School varsity basketball head coach Allan Silva will be the next guest at the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
The club’s luncheon is set for Monday at the Maple Garden Restaurant, which costs $16 per person. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program starts at noon.
Silva recently finished his first year at Saint Louis. Before leading the Crusaders, he was at the helm at Farrington for 11 years, leading the boys varsity basketball team to two Division II state titles and two OIA Division I championships.
