Fireworks reportedly cause Wailuku brush fire
A 12-year-old Maui girl reportedly threw fireworks into the brush near her Wailuku home, accidentally sparking a brush fire Wednesday, the Maui Fire Department reported today.
Firefighters responded at about 6:24 p.m. to a fire reported at Mokuhau Park in Happy Valley.
A fire crew found a 20-foot by 20-foot fire in grass and brush between Mokuhau Park basketball court and Iao Stream.
A group of youths were seen playing with fireworks, the Fire Department said in a news release.
One of them called 911 and reported that the fire accidentally started after a 12-year-old girl living in the area threw fireworks into the brush.
The blaze was extinguished at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
