A brush fire on Maui that stranded hundreds of motorists Saturday was 70 percent contained Monday.
The fire, which had closed a 15-mile stretch of Honoapiilani Highway between Olowalu and Maalaea, scorched about 4,700 acres. Firefighters spent Monday mopping up around the perimeter, the Maui Fire Department said.
About 20 firefighters and a battalion chief remained on scene, and crews planned to monitor the area overnight.
The blaze began Saturday near the intersection of Kuihelani and Honoapiilani highways. Among motorists stranded on Honoapiilani on Saturday was Mayor Alan Arakawa.
The Red Cross on Maui reported that 472 people stayed at the War Memorial Gym in Wailuku and about 250 at the Lahaina Civic Center on Saturday night. The shelters closed Sunday morning.
Rezentes sworn in to Kauai post
Wallace Rezentes Jr. was sworn in Friday morning as Kauai County’s new managing director, succeeding Nadine Nakamura.
Rezentes served for nearly 14 years as finance director under former Mayors Maryanne Kusaka and the late Bryan Baptiste, as well as Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.
“We’re very happy to have Wally on our team again,” Carvalho said in a news release. “He has the skills, expertise and experience to handle this key position in county government, and to help us complete our Holo Holo projects.”
Rezentes said he plans to quickly focus on affordable housing and transportation issues, and the adolescent treatment and healing center.
