Hawaii’s two entrants in the men’s 100 freestyle did not advance out of their respective heats at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb., on Wednesday.
‘Aukai Lileikis (Punahou/California) finished in 50.24 seconds, placing him 36th overall. Renny Richmond (Seabury Hall/Arizona) was 61st overall with a time of 50.74.
The event was won by Nathan Adrian in 48.43.
Lileikis is scheduled to compete today in the 200 IM. On Friday, Richmond is slated to swim the 50 free and 100 butterfly. Kanoa Kaleoaloha (Kamehameha/Florida State) is also scheduled for the 50 free and Micah Ornelas (University of Hawaii) the 100 fly.
Green sixth at Queen of the Beach
Peri Green, an incoming senior at La Pietra, finished sixth at last weekend’s inaugural Queen of the Beach Invitational at Hermosa Beach, Calif., part of the USAV Junior Tour.
Green, who has committed to play beach volleyball at USC, was the only player from Hawaii at the event that featured 52 of the top prep players from around the country. A two-time Hawaii high school beach state champion, Green advanced through a series of pool-play games before finishing sixth. Mika Mirkovic of Woodbridge (Calif.) High won the event that had players switching partners for each game to 21 points in each round of pool play.
Final AVPNext event Sunday
The last of five AVPNext-Hawaii Zone beach volleyball tournaments, a points series that leads to automatic berths in next month’s Manhattan Beach (Calif.) Open, is set for Sunday at Queen’s Beach.
Among the leading teams on the men’s side is James Ka and Kawika Burdine, the pair having had a top-three finish in all four of the previous events with a win on June 5. On the women’s side, Kaui Salzman and Rachel Sherman have finished in the top five in all events and won the season opener on May 1.
The event begins at 8 a.m. and is limited to 24 teams per gender. More information and online registration is available at spikeandserve.com.
Frowein gets top Pac-12 distinction
Stanford University gymnast and Punahou alum Jenna Frowein, who carried a 3.94 GPA and recently received a degree in architecture, was awarded the prestigious Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship.
Each Pac-12 school selected two student-athletes (one male, one female) to be chosen for the scholarship, which is worth $9,000 apiece. Frowein has been working on her master’s program in Sustainable Design and Construction/Civil Engineering with a 4.04 GPA in the Graduate School program.
