Brooke Hauguel’s swimsuit collection is right on trend — and not only for its sexy cutouts, halter tops and vintage-inspired high-waisted bottoms.
By designing for all body types — from size 0 to 22 — Haugel’s Peace of Paradise brand has embraced curvy women who had been shunned by the fashion industry. And with all the talk of body image in the press and on social media, combined with the growing acceptance of larger-size fashion models, the timing couldn’t have been better for the Maui-based company.
“There needs to be options out there for women of all sizes,” Hauguel said. “We want to help the people who have a hard time finding a suit in general, and then we want to go a step further and make them their dream swimsuit, something that’s incredibly flattering, amazingly comfortable and super trendy, that also happens to be within their price range.”

The 26-year-old Kihei resident was a psychology student at the University of Hawaii when she decided to learn how to sew.
“I am a size 20 myself, and one of the reasons I wanted to learn how to sew was because there was nothing out there for me to wear that was even remotely trendy,” Hauguel said.
The first pieces of clothing she turned out were “really awful,” Hauguel said. Then she tried swimsuits.
“My friends really liked them. We took a few photos and put them on Instagram and Etsy, and then the whole thing took off pretty quickly. We started getting orders from around the world right away.”
All of the company’s swimsuits are made on Maui by five employees who were taught to sew by Hauguel. From Day One, Peace of Paradise has offered swimwear up to size 22, and Hauguel accepts custom orders as well.
While providing plenty of flattering one- and two-piece styles for women who prefer more coverage, Peace of Paradise also sells cheeky thongs, adjustable, corset-style tops and lace-up bottoms, and uses alluring fabrics such as mesh and faux leather. Many pieces are reversible and can be mixed and matched for versatility. Separates are about $45 per piece, and one-piece suits are priced up to $120.
The company recently branched out into designing and printing its own fabrics, introducing new prints and styles throughout the year.
“My tastes change like the tides, so some days I like metallic mermaid prints and other days I enjoy neutrals, such as solid nude,” Hauguel said. “But overall, I really love our bird of paradise prints and our monstera fabrics.”
Other options include mermaid scales, birds of paradise, pineapples, coral and seashells, as well as solids.
When choosing a swimsuit, Hauguel said you can’t go wrong with an adjustable design. And suits that sit high on the hip elongate and slim your silhouette. Also, the cheekier, the better, she said: The more booty you show, the slimmer your bottom actually looks, and it makes your legs look longer.
