Gov. David Ige signed into law Thursday a bill that requires hospitals to explain and demonstrate medical and nursing duties to family caregivers once a patient is discharged. The governor approved House Bill 2252 (Act 69), known as the CARE Act, which recognizes the critical role of Hawaii’s unpaid caregivers who are burdened with caring for ailing family members and friends.
The CARE Act’s provisions require a caregiver’s name to be recorded when a patient is admitted into the hospital; mandates providers notify the caregiver if a hospital is transferring or releasing a patient; and instruct the caregiver on how to perform tasks such as managing medications, injections and wound care at home.
Hawaii is the 27th state in the nation (not including Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) to pass the CARE Act, establishing hospital discharge standards to ease the transition into the home.
