A preliminary hearing for a 37-year-old Kapahulu man charged with sexual assault and shooting the victim’s friend is scheduled in Honolulu District Court this afternoon.
Jorge Cano was being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center unable to post bail of $1 million after being charged with first-degree sexual assault, three counts of third-degree sexual assault, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of second-degree assault and eight firearm violations, including a prohibition against a felon owning or possessing a firearm.
According to a police affidavit filed in District Court on Monday, Cano shot Eddie Puulei, 47, in the stomach at Cano’s Waialae Avenue apartment June 3 where the two fought over $600 Cano owed Puulei. The two had met while undergoing treatment at Hina Mauka drug rehabilitation center, the police affidavit said.
Puulei had gone to Cano’s home upset because a 27-year-old female friend told him that Cano had sexually assaulted her there May 29.
Puulei told police that during an argument he tried to get a fanny pack that was attached to Cano’s waist in an attempt to get the money Cano owed him when a gun Cano held in his right hand went off.
Puulei said he then ran to a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store and caught a taxi to where the 27-year-old female victim lived on Liliha Street where he was treated by paramedics and taken in serious condition to a hospital.
The alleged sexual assault was not reported until the victim was being questioned about the shooting.
The woman told police that Cano pointed a handgun at her head and forced her to have sex May 29. She had gone to the apartment because there was supposed to be a barbecue party, but Cano was the only person there when she arrived.
