Honolulu’s fire chief picked up high marks in his third annual performance evaluation from the Honolulu Fire Commission last month, according to the Fire Department.

Chief Manuel P. Neves was appointed by the Fire Commission in February 2013. The chief is evaluated annually.

Neves had an overall score of 4.6 out of 5, according to a Honolulu Fire Department news release.

Neves received an excellent rating from the commissioners for his working relationship with the Fire Commission.

Mayor Kirk Caldwell, in a written statement, said, “Chief Neves has successfully led HFD to fulfilling its mission of providing for a safer community through prevention, preparedness, and effective emergency response.”

Neves’ job performance was based on multiple factors, including leadership qualities, managerial skills, personal and professional traits, and his interaction with the Fire Commission. This year’s scores — based on a 5.0 scale — include a 4.4 for leadership qualities and 4.5 for managerial skills.

Neves joined the Fire Department in 1979 and has previously served as fire captain, battalion chief and assistant chief.

“This favorable evaluation is the direct result of the dedication and hard work of the men and women of the Honolulu Fire Department,” Neves said. “It reflects on the excellence of the HFD as a whole, and I am proud of our civilian and uniformed personnel.”
