Police charged a 44-year-old man Sunday with second-degree murder and other offenses in connection with the fatal shooting of his mother in Maili on Friday.

Anthony F. Pereira II was also charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, kidnapping and first-degree terroristic threatening. His aggregate bail was set at $1 million.

Officers responding to an emergency call at a Farrington Highway residence found 66-year-old Barbara Pereira inside, dead from apparent gunshot wounds, and a man, identified as Pereira, with a firearm, police said. The officers were able to persuade the suspect to surrender.

At about the same time the officers were dispatched, a 48-year-old woman walked into the Waianae Police Station to report that she had been held against her will at the same home, police said.

Witnesses who were at Maili Beach Park across Farrington Highway from the home said they saw a truck pull out of the garage and head toward Waianae just before hearing gunshots.

Police said before they took Pereira to the cellblock, they transported him to a medical facility for treatment of injuries he suffered when he they took him into custody. During the arrest, police said, they found drugs in Pereira’s possession.

Police radio communications immediately following the shooting indicated that the suspect shot his mother in the leg.

According to Honolulu property tax records, Pereira owns the home at 87-436 Farrington Highway. A neighbor said a husband and wife, both in the 40s, have lived in the home with their son, who is in his 20s, for about five years.

And according to state court records, Pereira was an armed employee of the state Department of Public Safety as recently as January 2011. A DPS spokeswoman said Saturday that there is a corrections officer with a similar name, but she was not able to confirm whether he is the suspect in Friday’s shooting.
