Honolulu police have shut down all west-bound lanes of the H-1 freeway near Makakilo after a truck overturned.
Police reported the closure, just before the Makakilo off-ramp, at about 2:10 p.m. and reopened the lanes by 8:20 p.m.
Heavy rains over Central Oahu also helped slow traffic on the freeway.
Friday afternoon, an accident on the freeway in Waipahu and heavy rains also backed up traffic on the freeway for several hours. The accident closed two west-bound lanes.

I’m on the road daily. The motorists are getting more daring everyday that passes by.
we have the worst drivers in the world
We need Rail Now.
No, we need better drivers who aren’t in such a hurry.
and leave it in nanakuli
for what?..alot of people don’t work on the westside
NB – Total shibai. We do not need the extra billions of wasted dollars to take rail from Middle Street to Ala Moana. We do not need the large property tax increases to cover the crushing monthly O&M costs estimated between $10-20 million or more per month. ($120-$240 million per year or more)
Not to mention rail will receive the same shoddy, lack of maintenance government gives to infrastructure, roads, Zip Mobile, water, sewer lines and more. Rail will break down, stations closed to overdue maintenance.
Rail. Just another endless, growing, Nei money pit.
Rail will not improve truck drivers who drive too fast and need more training to be akamai. Oh and guess what, the rail is going it may not get done until after 2024. Oh another thing I live in Nanakuli and the rail will never ever help the Westside.
You want rail now then you dish out the $8 billion bucks for it!!!
Obviously you have never driven in the middle east. No such thing as a shoulder as traffic expands 1-2 lanes in to the dirt next to the road. Speed limits? Signals? Signage? What is that/Who cares…. Kind of like the motor cyclists that I frequently see driving between lanes, speeding down the “shoulder” and changing 3 lanes at a time here. Not to mention the idiots that can’t be bothered to maintain a safe buffer between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them.
someone probably hydroplaned and lost control. that part of the freeway around the bend always floods when there are even brief downpours like today.
Yeah, there’s a low spot in the road which fills with water. Scary.
If it turns out this accident was caused by driver error or poor vehicle maintenance, then in a fair world the driver or the person responsible for the vehicle’s mechanical condition should be sent a bill for the time wasted by each driver and passenger who got stuck in the resulting traffic. Figure the final dollar amount to be the total hours wasted multiplied by the prevailing minimum wage. That would, again in a fair world, prove to be a serious penalty for negligence.
Forget sending him a bill. Probably would never pay it anyway. Just throw him in jail.
These inattentive, speeding and careless drivers think their time is more valuable than the rest of ours. Their licenses should be revoked.
Well they are going to enjoy there time without a truck for a while.
well it looks like a commercial garbage truck so yeah
If it is a garbage truck has to be a Rolloffs. They have the most aggressive drivers I have ever seen.
Also yesterday morning, was nearly sideswiped by a roll-off truck (Ce&S I believe) going Diamond Head on H-1 around Punahou exit, he had to be going 70 mph in heavy traffic! What’s with these guys? They’re driving their vehicles like dangerous weapons. Saving a couple of minutes isn’t worth someone’s life.
Imagine this at the same time, on Monday.
These big rigs often speed along over 70mph. Inexperienced “big body” drivers often think they’re driving sports cars. Scary.
Trucks are the worst drivers in this area. They go 20 miles under the speed limit in the left lane, or speed in the right lane. Not sure how this particular accident was caused, but driving on this road every day I can’t say I’m not surprised.
Traffic was bad going in to town this morning after an accident, then gets worse going westbound this afternoon. I feel sorry for those guys living on the west side who decided to spend the day in town today.
Living in town – priceless
Wow, six hours to remove?
