Arrests made in vandalism of police memorial
Police arrested and cited a 20-year-old man and a juvenile with misdemeanors Thursday in connection with the vandalism of the Hawaii Law Enforcement Memorial on the State Capitol grounds earlier this month.
Officers arrested Jayson Campos and a juvenile boy Thursday afternoon on suspicion of desecration of a public monument or structure. Campos is free after he posted bail of $200. He is scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. June 23 in District Court.
Campos was arrested for the May 13 incident where bicycle tire tracks and skateboard wheel markings were discovered on the memorial a few days before it was dedicated.
The case involving the boy will be handled by the Family Court, where proceedings are confidential.
Several police officers spent their off-duty hours power washing the walls to clean the memorial before the dedication ceremony.
A second incident on May 17 was reported by a city worker, who found similar bicycle tracks on the memorial.

Punish them.
That memorial is the worst design I have ever seen – it is obviously crazily tempting to youngsters to ride on it! It is so inviting! It is almost like entrapment!
It is built like ramp for skateboarding or bicycling.
They just weren’t thinking at all!
Just because it looks inviting does not give them the right to vandalize it. Can the 20 year old not read? Obviously it’s a memorial. That punk just has no respect.
Teach them what its like to disrespect!!
put up some kind of barrier in front of the memorial to stop this. the design just invites it.
Agree
Have them clean that Memorial every Saturday for the next 2 years!
Great idea.
I like a nice round figure of 10 years! Yeah, that’s the ticket.
should clean all the memorials.
I like this!
Good idea. A fine that they won’t pay will mean nothing.
More like ignorance than vandalism, I think. It’s not like these self-absorbed perps ever watch or read the news to realize that they are causing damage.
I don’t think you need to watch the news to know that you are causing damage. A 9 y.o. maybe; but not a 20 y.o.
True!
What….ignorance of the law is not an excuse for vandalism. The blame is not elsewhere…it’s within themselves.
It is disrespect!
somethings wrong…all parents should check their kids if this is really wrong …and please do NOT MAKE MORE LAWS to curb this …
What???
You need to have a window in your stomach so you can see where you’re going because your head is stuck up your butthole…
If the evidence holds up and Mr. Campos and juvenile found guilty that they will do some jail time. But please do not let this become a “Catch and Release”. I hope that the desecration of a public monument has the same penalty as criminal property damage, which I believe is a felony(?) Will be interested in outcome of this incident.
The designer should be sued for malfeasance. How can anything like that be a fitting memorial? It is a junk design.
You dumb or what/? This is disrespect and nothing less. In the old days you get a slap in the head and go clean it up. Thats what they should get! Yeah and a fast slap in the head!
It might be a poor design but it is still Vandalism. Let’s blame the person that did the crime, not the victim.
Jail time? Sure … that sounds reasonable for tire marks.
Unfortunately, judging from the size of the bail ($200), the sentence, if found guilty, will be a slap on the hand.
Cleaning up this or other graffiti would be a better penalty.
It’s funny how HPD is able to catch vandals that disrespected a police monument but seem unable to catch any other vandals using spray paint and writing their names all over town and on every bus. Seems like selective enforcement, apparently it has to affect them personally before any real effort will be made to catch vandals.
They were off duty to watch something of value to them personally. When is the last time you camped out to catch these graffiti people?
I missed that part. I know they were off duty to clean it up, but I didn’t see anything about them staking it out on off duty time to catch the crumb. If they did, I hope Campos accidently fell down the steps next to the monument.
Reads like somebody must have turned them in. They were arrested for an earlier incident not on the spot.
Got to put protection in place to discourage the Punks!
Hope they get some harsh punishment. What punks!
No! – That construct goes in the category of “attractive nuisance” and the designer should be responsible, and those poor kids were entrapped !
@Allaha You keep repeating yourself
Poor kids?? You’re nuts. Let’s see how you feel if someone does this to your car or house. SMH!
Confiscate the bikes
Best way would be to distribute skidmark-free bicycle tires.
Make them scrub graffiti off all the walls at parks
Allaha!!u wouldn’t be saying that if u had a family member died in the line of duty..i would love to slap the crap out of those kids..no respect
What do say we let these young men have their trial before we start in with all the imaginary tortures and punishments.
