Police consider negligent injury charges in Kaaawa school bus collision

A 51-year-old woman is the focus of a negligent injury investigation after the sports utility vehicle she was driving collided with a crowded school bus in Kaaawa Tuesday night, sending the driver and three young students to the hospital.

Emergency Medical Services reported the SUV driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition and three children were taken to the hospital in stable condition following the 7:05 p.m. accident on Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Regional Park.

The driver of the SUV was pinned in her vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters, Fire Capt. David Jenkins said.

Three girls, each about 10 years old, were treated and taken to Castle Medical Center by paramedics. The students were released last night with no serious injuries, according to the Department of Education.

About 30 Lunalilo Elementary school students and adult chaperones were on the bus. The group had been on a field trip to the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie.

It’s not a surprise that vehicles are hitting pedestrians on our streets. Some Hawaii drivers can’t even see a SCHOOL BUS. When people get behind the wheel of a vehicle, they need to pay attention to what they are doing – that is DRIVING! Not making phone calls, texting, eating, putting on makeup, playing with the kids, and even conversations if they are turning their eyes away from the road and what is ahead of them.
