Lelau Loto jumped a 6-foot wall as part of a physical test for the San Jose Police Department recruitment team Thursday at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. The SJPD recruiters have been testing about 50 candidates with drills such as dragging a 160-pound dummy, endurance running and wall jumping. Thursday was the last day of testing.

Marcus Garthe of Cyrious Acro maneuvered his Cyr wheel at the tennis courts in Kapiolani Regional Park on Thursday. The custom wheel is made of aluminum covered with PVC vinyl tubing and is collapsible. Garthe, who is originally from Seattle, is a traveling circus performer and will be leaving the isles to perform in Ire land and Australia later this year. He performs with friends almost every day in Waikiki in the early evening at Kalakaua and Kealohilani avenues.

More than 2,000 students in 28 schools and locations throughout Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Saipan and Palau learned from more than 200 Bank of Hawaii employees about the importance of developing lifelong savings habits. About 30 volunteers taught students in 19 classrooms at Princess Kaiulani.

The union representing more than 200 workers at the state’s largest skilled-nursing facility began a three-day strike Monday evening in response to what it describes as unfair treatment of employees. The strike began at 5:30 p.m. and was scheduled to end at the same time Thursday, according to Unite Here Local 5, the workers’ union, which filed three unfair labor practice charges against Hale Nani for intimidating union supporters. Hale Nani, owned by Utah-based Avalon Health Care, is a 288-bed facility at 1677 Pensacola St. with 270 patients and 416 employees. It opened in 1962. Local 5 represents 211 workers — primarily certified nursing assistants and employees in the dietary, maintenance, recreation and housekeeping departments. Workers and management at Hale Nani are encouraging patients and their families to get services at the facility during the strike.
