After Anthony Kahoohanohano-Davis broke two records, Baldwin’s coaches told him to slow it down.
Rather than following their instructions, he set another record on Friday at the Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships at Kamehameha. The Baldwin senior broke the boys triple jump record of 48 feet, 1 inch in each of his three jumps during Friday’s trials. He now holds the state meet record at 49-103⁄4.
“The first (jump) got me hyped,” Kahoohanohano-Davis said. “The officials, they didn’t mark it for the record, so second jump I was like I have to do it again. I hit the second one and I was feeling the adrenaline, but Coach said stop already.
“I got to get 50. I did the third one. I tried … almost.”
Kahoohanohano-Davis hit 48-7 on his first jump, then made 49-1. His 49-10 3⁄4 carries over to today’s finals, meaning it can hold up as the winning mark. But he wants to break his own record and has three attempts today to do so. Larry Khan-Smith held the previous record from 1986.
“I want to hit that 50,” Kahoohanohano-Davis said.
Kahoohanohano-Davis also finished first in the trials of the long jump with a mark of 23-11⁄2 and won his heat of the 110-meter hurdles in 15.03 seconds. He’s also the top seed in the high jump after clearing 6-10 this season. No trials were held in the high jump and the meet record is 6-9.
Baldwin’s Bailey Kaopuiki, the defending champion in the 100 and 200, finished first in the 200 and second in the 100. The Bears, who won state titles in 2012 and 2013, are looking to leave this weekend with the team championship.
“We want to take it home, but we know there’s tough competition out here,” Kahoohanohano-Davis said. “We just have to keep our minds straight and try and keep improving.”
Justin Desaki’s time of 10.75 in the 100 dash surpassed Shane Victorino’s meet record of 10.80 from 1999. But the Kamehameha junior thinks he can lower his time in the finals.
“Especially since (defending) state winner is right next to me, I think can do it,” Desaki said. “The pressure and the fans and my teammates all telling me I can do it just makes me want to go.”
Kristen O’Handley scored one point for defending girls champion Kaiser by placing sixth in the high jump. O’Handley was the top finisher in the 100 trials and won her heat in the 200 and 400 trials to advance to the finals. She also ran on Kaiser’s 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams that advanced.
Hawaii Prep’s Kaui Taylor repeated as the high jump champion after clearing 5-4. Taylor almost cleared 5-6, which would’ve broken the meet record of 5-5 1⁄2. Her body cleared the bar, but her legs clipped the bar on her descent into the high jump pit.
Castle’s William Ewaliko won the boys pole vault after clearing 14-3. Ewaliko had a chance to further his personal record in the pole vault but missed in three attempts at 14-9.
“It was a new height for me,” Ewaliko said. “I’ve never seen it before. It was a challenge for me and unfortunately I didn’t make it.”
Hawaii Prep senior Emma Taylor was the top qualifier in the 100 hurdles at 14.75 and will go for her fourth state title in the event today. Taylor also finished first in the 300 hurdles at 45.37 and will go for her third title in that event. She also finished first in the 200 in 25.54.
Farrington was the top qualifier in the unified races for the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. The events feature two students from a school’s track team and two special education students.
