Green-minded Earth Day celebrations are in the works at three churches this weekend and next.
At Central Union Church, Elisabet Sahtouris, an internationally known evolutionary biologist, futurist and sustainability consultant, will give a talk at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in the church’s Women’s Building, 1660 S. Beretania St.
Sahtouris, a professor in residence at Chaminade University, has also worked as a science writer for the NOVA-HORIZON TV science series, was a United Nations consultant on indigenous peoples and holds the Elisabet Sahtouris Chair in Living Economies at the World Business Academy, according to a news release.
In addition, Sahtouris attended the Paris Climate Change Summit in December; participated in two invitational dialogues with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India, and in the Vatican; and has authored several books. More information is available online at sahtouris.com.

>> On April 24, “Earth Sunday,” Sahtouris is slated to present a talk titled “Living Our Dream Future Now,” 10:30 a.m. at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave. Sunday School children will sing and perform a skit. After the service the children will plant a plumeria tree.
Crossroads organizer Chuck Burrows said, “Along with the Hawaii Interfaith Power and Light, we are encouraging other interfaith and Christian groups to conduct an Earth Sunday or Earth Sabbath worship service on climate change and ‘Caring for the Creation’ from a religious perspective.”
>> Nuuanu Congregational Church’s Ulu Wai Ministry will hold an environmental fair dubbed “Green Day III,” 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 23 at the church, 2651 Pali Highway.
Among the highlights: Boy Scout Troop 201 will offer waterless car washes (including vacuuming); a free recycling section of gently used clothing, linens, towels and small appliances; a rummage sale; handmade craft items; and hydroponic kits. Also for sale will be red wiggler worms, worm castings, worm tea and worm bins.
Ralph Rhoads, a worm specialist known as “da Worm Guy,” will give a talk at 9:30 a.m. about the role of bacteria in vermicomposting, how to make worm tea and how a worm bin works. At 11 a.m. bokashi (composting) experts Jan and Lee Ann will talk about bokashi and beneficial microbes.
Pacific Corporate Solutions will accept electronic equipment for recycling, and Shred-It Inc. will collect boxes of papers for shredding.
All proceeds go to NCC’s Mission Ministry, which supports the homeless and the needy.
