The annual Taste of Hongwanji Bazaar returns Sunday at the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, a Buddhist temple mauka of H-1 along Pali Highway in Honolulu.
The bazaar revolves around food, and attendees each year look forward to purchasing Herb Yasukochi’s beef stew and the Tamamoto family’s Okinawan spare rib daikon soup.
Okonomiyaki, the Japanese street food cooked on a griddle, is also an annual attraction, prepared by students from the Pacific Buddhist Academy, using a recipe from the temple’s Hongwanji cookbook series.

KC Waffle Dogs and Ono shakes are expected to be big hits with the crowd, as usual.
Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin’s long-popular “Favorite Island Cookery” cookbook series will be available for purchase. The six cookbooks and index volume published over the years since 1973 will be offered at $10 per volume, or $55 for the set.
The 2,190 recipes over 1,272 pages of the six cookbooks offer wide-ranging dishes, depending on the cookbook’s theme in the year of publication. The first volume, published in 1973, offers an overview of Japanese and other ethnic favorites, while the 1975 book emphasizes food prepared for Buddhist observances. The 1995 book focuses on unique nutritional aspects of different food to help with making healthy choices.
All recipes were compiled from recipes submitted by members of the Honpa Hongwanji Betsuin.
Another popular feature is the temple’s rummage sale, at which shoppers can find practical, gently used household goods as well as unusual items. Handcrafted items also will be sold.
A bake sale, fresh produce sale, plant sale and games for the family will round out the half-day event and help raise funds for the nonprofit.
Hongwanji temples on Oahu, Buddhist schools and other organizations are teaming up to support this year’s event.
