A 73-year-old woman died Friday evening after she was struck by a car while attempting to cross the street in front of Diamond Head Theatre.
The incident was reported at 7:55 p.m., just before the theater’s production of “Camelot.”
According to Honolulu Police Department traffic officials, the woman was not in a crosswalk when she was struck by a 2000 Toyota Camry traveling south on Makapuu Avenue.
The Camry was driven by a 41-year-old Honolulu man.
The woman was initially listed in critical condition with head and internal injuries but later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said excessive speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the incident.
Theater patron Elise Anderson arrived at the scene shortly after the woman was struck. She said it appeared from the position of the woman’s body and the damage to the right side of the car that the woman, who was using a cane, had almost made it across the street when she was hit.
Anderson, who attends every Diamond Head Theatre production, said the area of road fronting the theater is dangerous for pedestrians because of a lack of lighting and the slope of the road, which dips, rises and falls just before reaching the theater, leaving drivers little time to react.
Anderson added that many theatergoers jaywalk in front of the theater due to the distance of the nearest crosswalk.
Conditions may have been darker than usual. According to witnesses, two street lights in the immediate vicinity were out. One area resident said the lights have been out for weeks but have not been replaced despite complaints to the city.
