It’s hard enough for a woman to find a good man. So imagine how hard it is for a woman to find another woman. According to lesbian blogging duo Megan Evans and Whitney Bacon, it’s nearly impossible.
The London-based couple met in 2008 on MySpace and got engaged three years later in Hawaii.
Evans and Bacon started the Find Femmes international online dating service in August to help “femmes,” lesbians who are traditionally feminine in appearance and manner, find love. A launch party for their new Hawaii-specific site was held Monday at The Modern Honolulu.
“As lesbians, it’s often harder to find women in your local area, so we find many are turning to find love online,” said the 28-year-old Evans, who works as a human resources adviser. “Online dating is certainly becoming more and more popular. We hope to help others find love and friendship — what we like to call femmeship.”
Bacon, 27, an account manager who is originally from Kentucky, lived on Oahu for six years and was a student at the University of Hawaii when she and Evans began a long-distance relationship. When Evans traveled from England to Hawaii in 2011, Bacon got down on one knee at Waimanalo Beach and proposed. They were united in a civil partnership ceremony in England in 2012.
“When we started out in a long-distance relationship, we had no idea how long it would take,” Evans said. “If we had known it would take four years, we may have thought twice, but I’m so glad we didn’t, as we’re definitely soulmates and meant to be.”
Because Hawaii is close to their hearts, the couple wanted to create a site dedicated to the islands, with a completely different look from the other Find Femmes sites tailored to the United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada and Australia. There are about 6,000 users on Find Femmes worldwide. Rates start at $19.99 per month.
“If you do want to chat with women across the mainland, then you can just switch to the USA site,” added Bacon, noting that she and Evans are an example of how long-distance relationships can work. “I’m so grateful we managed to find one another online. One click of a button changed our lives.”
