St. Patrick’s Day is Thursday, so don’t forget to dress in something green before stepping out to celebrate the Irish.
>>The day’s celebration starts with the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade beginning at noon at Fort DeRussy, continuing along Kalakaua Avenue and ending at Kapiolani Park. Then the “real” celebration begins with a post-parade party at Kelley O’Neil’s (311 Lewers St.) featuring corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, beef stew, corned beef sandwiches and a selection of Irish brews including Guinness, Harp, Smithwick’s and Killian’s; and whiskeys including Jameson’s, Bushmills, Tullamore Dew, Teeling and Two Gingers.
>>In the University area Anna O’Brien’s (2440 S. Beretania St.) is holding a party in its parking lot featuring Samuel Adams and Pabst Blue Ribbon. There will also be a Boston Baked Bean eating contest, Prettiest Red Head competition and a search for the best leprechaun. Inside the bar, dine on the traditional Irish corned beef and cabbage while recorded Irish tunes fill the downstairs pub. Upstairs will feature live Irish entertainment beginning at 5 p.m.
>>Downtown, Murphy’s begins its celebration at 11 a.m. in the open-air parking lot at the corners of Nuuanu Avenue and Marin Street. There will be a wide variety of food, including a Guinness Oyster Bar. Then at 6 p.m. Nuuanu Avenue and Merchant Street close with O’Toole’s joining in on the fun by providing entertainment by Celtic Pipes and Drums, the Doolin Rakes and Piranha Brothers.
>>If you’re looking for just the food, sans the partying, maybe 12th Ave. Grill is the place for you. The restaurant is offering house-made Hawaii Ranchers Grass-fed Corned Beef ($27), beer-battered fish and chips ($28) and a small-plate special of Niihau lamb shepherd’s pie ($15). Ben Flores is creating two whiskey cocktails for the occasion and there will also be a special dessert — Irish Car Bomb cake ($9) — available. For light or early eaters, check out the bar’s happy hour (5:30 to 6:30 p.m.) specials of Irish cheddar fondue with soda bread ($5), Red Breast scotch-cured salmon with rye crisp ($6) and colcannon with house creme fraiche ($5). The 12th Ave Grill is located at 1120 12th Ave. To reserve call 732-9469.
>>Or, if you want to eat something all American, Hard Rock Cafe Honolulu is offering its Guinness Irish Stout and Jameson Irish Whiskey infused-burger through April 10. The bacon cheeseburger is made with an Angus beef patty and topped with Jameson Irish Whiskey bacon jam, Guinness Stout cheese sauce, tomatoes and seasoned arugula. The burger costs $17.95 and comes with fries and an optional topping of extra Guinness cheese sauce and bacon. Info: hardrock.com, 955-7383.
