>> Fun fact: Jenkins goes to the same school as Jeremy Tabuyo, a Saint Louis alumnus who is a wide receiver on the Aggies’ football team. Jenkins and Tabuyo raced each other in high school, with Jenkins finishing first and Tabuyo second in the 100-meter dash in both the 2011 and 2012 state championships.
It’s the second-fastest time in the world for the 2016 season, and it was clocked by Jenkins, a 2012 Kapolei alumnus, at the Charlie Thomas Invitational this month in College Station, Texas.
The Texas A&M senior has the fastest time by an American and fell just 0.01 seconds short of the mark set by LSU’s Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake.
Jenkins will finish the indoor season with the SEC Championships beginning Thursday, followed by the NCAAs next month.
Then comes outdoor season, which ends in June, and then, if all goes well. Jenkins will try to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“That’s my goal,” Jenkins said before practice Tuesday. “I’ll try my luck with USA and see how it goes.”
It’s a process leading up to the main event in July, but Jenkins is off to an impressive start.
Injuries have hampered him for much of his high school and college career, but finally, in the year that matters the most, he says he’s the healthiest he’s been.
“My goal for this year is to set myself up for the rest of my track career professionally and for the most part, while I have times in mind, this whole season is about me competing healthy,” Jenkins said. “I’ve had ups and downs with my hamstring in high school and when I got to my freshman year in college, I had some issues with my groin.
“Last year was a transition issue for me because your body has to get used to a new program and now I’m at the point of being ready to perform well and staying healthy.”
A three-time individual state champion in high school, Jenkins didn’t receive a major Division I scholarship and ended up at Southern University for two years.
The school was issued a postseason ban from the NCAA for issues related to student-athletes’ Academic Progress Rates, so Jenkins couldn’t compete at nationals in his sophomore season.
Jenkins, who was already a highly ranked sprinter, requested his transfer so he could compete on college’s biggest stage.
“We weren’t able to compete for a national championship for academic department issues that were out of my control, so I decided to leave,” Jenkins said.
Unlike in high school, Jenkins was a popular target for the top schools at that point, including LSU, which is located right down the road from Southern University.
Instead, Jenkins decided to attend Texas A&M, where he was lured by coach Pat Henry, who has won 33 national titles in both men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor as a coach at both Texas A&M and LSU.
“I looked at his track record and felt like he had a plan for me,” Jenkins said. “He’s been in the game longer than I have been alive and has built a legacy for himself.”
The transition into a new program was yet another adjustment for Jenkins to make, but the timing was OK.
The target year for Jenkins to be at his peak has always been 2016, when his graduating year matched the Summer Olympics.
The time he posted three weeks ago showed him he is right where he needs to be.
“Indoor is something new to me because I never ran it until I got to college,” Jenkins said. “Indoor really helps me prepare for outdoor because it puts me in a different environment with 200 meters all the way around. It’s like running in a bowl almost.
“If you can manage it and hold your form in that kind of setting, then outdoor is nothing.”
The first outdoor meet of the season is March 18 and the NCAA Championships are held in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11.
The U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team Trials are held this year at the same track just three weeks later.
“That’s really good because I’ll be fresh off the national championships,” Jenkins said. “It’s been a phenomenal start for me (this season) both health-wise and mentally and I’m in a great environment here. The Lord has blessed me. I’m ready to do this.”
