Kealaokapuamakamae Aquino believed time would run out on her Kamehameha-Maui team.
The Warriors trailed 4-3 in the final minutes of regulation as Aquino came off the bench to play in the goal. But Quinn Williams scored with three minutes remaining to force overtime at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex. Aquino then made several big stops in both overtime periods and during the penalty-kick shootout as KS-Maui edged Castle 5-4 in Wednesday’s first round of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships.
“I didn’t think personally that we were going to be able to pull it through,” said Aquino, who started during the season but came off the bench Wednesday. “But we did and it’s a great feeling because now we can go on. That’s all we really wanted.”
The Warriors (8-2-1) play second-seeded ‘Iolani (10-0-2) in today’s Division I quarterfinals.

Aquino was tested during both scoreless overtime periods. She jumped to her right to catch a shot late in the second overtime to keep the game tied. She then stopped Castle’s first two attempts in the shootout. Jrae Viela, Clara-Josephine Medeiros, Kameaiomakamae Drayer-Hoopii and Kaitlyn Randall converted their penalty kicks as KS-Maui won the shootout 4-3. Deandra Muraoka, Mikayla Harada and Lauren Takasato made their penalty kicks for Castle (9-5-1).
“Instinct, really. The first two, I just knew where they were going,” Aquino said. “The last three, I kind of was guessing and they made their shots. But the first two, I had a feeling and it worked out.”
The game was tied 1-1 at halftime after Castle’s Danielle Chang scored in the 30th minute and Williams scored in the 32nd. Muraoka, Vanessa Chinen and Ciana Rivera scored in the second half for Castle. Williams had three goals in the second half.

DIVISION II
Makua Lani 3, Waianae 1
Jewel Stroud, Pua Kauhaihao and Akari Shimizu scored in the Lions’ win over the Seariders in a Division II first-round game at Waipio.
“The goal was to shoot for states and a lot of people were like, ‘You have a young team.’ I was like, ‘We can dream big,’ ” said Makua Lani coach Riley Alcos. The Lions (6-5-1) advance to play second-seeded Kapaa (10-1-1) in today’s Division II quarterfinals.
The Lions flew out of Kailua-Kona at 6 a.m. Wednesday, then spent the day at the mall since they couldn’t check into their rooms. It took over 30 minutes for Makua Lani to find its rhythm before it took over in the second half. Kauhaihao scored in the 41st minute when she stole the ball from a defender in the box and drove in for the goal. Hannah Shimizu, one of three seniors on the team and the only player with state tournament experience, passed over the defense to her younger sister, Akari, who collected the ball to score in the 69th minute.
“Soccer is very physical, but it’s also a mental game, so you need to check in mentally before you can get there physically,” Hannah Shimizu said. “That’s what we were working on in the first half, checking in.”
Enee Taiolu scored for Waianae (2-12-0) in the 79th minute.
Waialua 4, McKinley 0
Dalles Young-Toledo scored twice as the Bulldogs (5-7-1) shut out the Tigers (3-10-0). Ashley Nakoa-Kawahakui and Emma Knott also scored for Waialua, which plays top-seeded two-time champion Hawaii Prep (9-1-1).
