Hawaii County police identify pedestrian killed by pickup truck in Waimea
Hawaii County police have identified the 38-year-old man who died Sunday from injuries sustained when he was struck by a pickup truck on Kawaihae Road in Waimea as Jacob Freebairn of Kamuela.
An autopsy conducted Wednesday showed that Freebairn died from his injuries sustained in Sunday’s accident.
Police received a call at 1:13 a.m. Sunday of an accident. Police found that a 2010 Nissan Frontier pickup truck had been traveling west on Kawaihae Road near the Door of Faith Church when it veered across the highway and struck Freebairn, who had been walking eastbound on the east shoulder of the roadway.
Freebairn was taken to the Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:20 a.m.
The 27-year-old Kapaau man who was the truck driver was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and released pending further investigation.
