A tie was enough.
‘Iolani clinched the ILH girls soccer title after a 0-0 tie at Kamehameha on Friday. The Raiders, who also won the league title in 2013 and 2014, finished the regular season 10-0-2 with 32 points. Kamehameha finished 10-1-1 with 31 points. Both teams had already clinched state tournament berths prior to Friday’s game.
“We’ve definitely come a long way,” said ‘Iolani goalkeeper Katie Yuu. “We have a really young team and we had to build up the whole way. Kamehameha is a very scary opponent and we’re really small, but we stepped it up. A tie is a tie.”
‘Iolani’s defense held off Kamehameha’s attack in the second half. Yuu had four big saves in the first 10 minutes of the second half. She also made a diving stop with two minutes left in the game to preserve the shutout.
“I just know my team has my back,” Yuu said. “My defense has been working really well this year and I just had to do my job, get the balls and get as much as I can.”
Rachel Bowler, who signed with San Diego State earlier in the week, has anchored ‘Iolani’s defense the entire season.
“She’s a huge presence on the field,” Yuu said. “Everyone is intimidated of her. She can even go up and down the lines. She makes sure everyone is in everyone’s spot and aligned correctly.”
The state soccer tournament will be held Feb. 17-20 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex. With the league title comes a first-round bye for the Raiders, who won the state title in 2013 and lost in the championship game last year.
“We’re just going to take it game by game and hopefully we’ll make it through,” Yuu said. “And we still need to work on conditioning, keeping up with our footwork and going back to basics.”
Kamehameha will return to the state tournament after winning the state title in 2014 but missing out last year after finishing third in the ILH. With a week off before the state tournament, the Warriors will focus on fitness, combination plays and working together as a group.
“The seniors are disappointed because it’s our senior game and they wanted to win the ILH this year,” Missy Moore said. “But I told them just use this as fuel for the fire, refocus and regroup and let’s take them at states.”
