A high-surf warning is in effect for the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and for north shores of Maui, through 6 p.m. today.
Surf along north shores was expected to reach 20 to 30 feet by Saturday evening, gradually dropping to 18 to 25 feet by this evening. Surf along west shores will drop from 15 to 20 feet to 10 to 15 feet over the same period, according to the National Weather Service.
Tree removal will interrupt Wailuku traffic
Traffic along West Waiko Road in Wailuku will be intermittently stopped because of tree removal work between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Maui County said the tree removal consists of seven Moreton Bay fig trees on the north side of West Waiko Road, which are damaging nearby residential properties.
Motorists and pedestrians are asked to follow all traffic signs and the directions of crews in the area.
Supplies drive aids students at Kauai school
Kauai RSVP is conducting a school supplies collection drive for students in need at Waimea Canyon Middle School.
Among the items being collected by the organization that is part of the Kauai County Agency on Elderly Affairs are 2- and 3-inch binders, two-pocket dividers, and regular size Expo markers in any color for dry-erase boards.
“According to the school, these are the items that the students can really use,” said RSVP Director Celia Melchor-Questin.
The supplies can be dropped off Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Agency on Elderly Affairs at the Lihue Civic Center, Piikoi Building, Suite 330. The deadline is Jan. 22.
Additionally, donations will be collected at the Lihue Neighborhood Center on Jan. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kuhio Highway lane to be shut for road striping
The right northbound lane of Kuhio Highway will be closed from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday because of road striping work at the junction with Hardy Street in Lihue.
Motorists also will not be allowed to make right turns onto Hardy Street from the highway.
Motorists should seek alternate routes and allow extra travel time.
