Whether full of youthful exuberance or perhaps just a little impatient, Aiden Osorio Fred wasn’t about to miss a single hour of his birth year.
The little bon vivant was born at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women &Children at 12:32 a.m. on Friday, earning the distinction of the first Hawaii-born baby of 2016.
Parents Sheila Osorio, 30, and Berney Fred, 34, were attending a New Year’s party at Pier 37 when Osorio felt the early pangs of labor.
Aiden arrived a day before his due date weighing 7 pounds, 1.4 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches.
The newest Fred joins a family that includes older brothers Zachary, 9, and Tristan, 11 months.
Osorio, a cashier at Palama Super Market, and Fred, a meat cutter at Kukui Meat and Food, said they were tired but happy after a most memorable New Year’s Eve.
“I’m not going to have any time,” Osorio said, as she laughingly contemplated her immediate future raising three young boys.
Aiden shares a few similarities with last year’s New Year’s firstborn, Jordan Manuel. Both arrived before their due dates. Both are the third children in their families. And both were born at Kapiolani.
The last connection is not so surprising given that roughly half of the 12,000 babies born in the state each year are delivered at Kapiolani, according to hospital representative Katie Gallo.
