The first of three new buildings was completed at Damien Memorial School in the largest expansion project in the school’s 53-year history.
Dedicated on Dec. 11, the $15 million project’s first structure is the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Building — a $3 million multipurpose facility that will accommodate wrestling, judo and weight training. The project also includes an expansion of the parking lot and an upgrade of the football and track fields.
Since changing to a coed campus in 2012, enrollment has nearly doubled — to 685 students from 360. Previously, enrollment at the Catholic prep school, 1401 Houghtailing St., was limited to boys in grades 6-12.
The second structure to go up will be a music building with upgraded practice rooms, improved acoustics and additional storage areas for instruments and equipment. The third will be a student services center, which will house a library with technology, classrooms, counseling offices, a health room and administration and conference meeting spaces.
CORRECTION: The Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Building was completed and dedicated on Dec. 11. An earlier version of this story and the story on page B4 of Saturday’s paper said work started on the project.
Event marks century for church in Kalihi
St. Anthony Kalihi parish will celebrate its centennial year with an event, “100 Years Growing in Faith, Hope, and Love.”
On Jan. 10, Bishop Larry Silva will deliver the 9 a.m. Mass, followed at 10:30 a.m. by the St. Anthony Kalihi Fair, which will feature cultural and game booths, and entertainment depicting important events at the church. Included in the program is the coronation of the parish’s Centennial Court.
St. Anthony’s has been serving the residents of lower Kalihi, including waves of Hawaiian, Portuguese, Japanese, Filipino, Samoan and Micronesian immigrants.

Nonprofit to host women’s conference
Youth With a Mission is now accepting registration for its second annual Christian Women’s Gathering, which will be held next month in Kailua- Kona.
Darlene Cunningham, co-founder of YWAM, will be the keynote speaker at the event, set for Jan. 23.
