Hawaii has its own JEDI Council, but you won’t find a pidgin-speaking Yoda or a shaka-throwing Mace Windu there.
This collective belongs to the Hawaii Credit Union League. But even though its members find humor in the “Star Wars” acronym — JEDI stands for Junior Executive Development Initiative — they’re more concerned with the Fed than dark Sith lords. The league is an advocate organization for credit unions in Hawaii and Guam and seeks to keep its members informed about legislative and regulatory decisions.
The acronym was a happy coincidence for the organizers who started the group in 2013, intent on encouraging young professionals to make a difference in the industry, said Tracy Aiwohi, engagement manager for the league. They came up with the name and then realized the “Star Wars” connection.
They’re a spirited bunch. According to Aiwohi, when the JEDI Council sent a member to a conference in Washington, D.C., last year, it offered the appropriate salutation: “We said, ‘May the Force be with you.’”
