Fire damages Hilo squatter home
Big Island firefighters early this morning extinguished a fire at an abandoned home in Hilo that was occupied by three squatters.
The fire was reported at 1:20 a.m. at Ohai Street in Hilo.
When firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke coming from a bedroom on the right side of the house.
Police helped two women out of the home. A third person, who notified the women of the fire, left the scene before fire units arrived.
Damage was contained to two bedrooms and an adjacent hallway. The fire was extinguished at 2:20 a.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
