The National Park Service has reopened the USS Arizona Memorial to visitors after engineers determined its dock is safe.
The park service said Friday only minor repairs were needed.
The agency Thursday suspended memorial visits after officials noticed bolts connecting the dock to the memorial were stressed.
World War II Valor in the Pacific Superintendent Jacqueline Ashwell thanked the public for its patience while officials looked into the problem.
The Arizona Memorial is an open-air structure honoring the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed when their battleship was bombed by Japanese planes Dec. 7, 1941. The memorial sits above the sunken hull of the vessel in Pearl Harbor.
Visitors ride boats to the memorial from a visitors center on shore.
During last week’s closure, visitors were able to board boats to the memorial and float past it to see the battleship, but they were not able to disembark onto it.
Still rough going on east shores
A high-surf advisory remains in effect through 6 p.m. Tuesday for the east shores of all islands.
The National Weather Service on Sunday canceled a high-surf advisory for southern shores.
Surf of 6 to 9 feet is expected, thanks to an east swell and strong tradewinds, the weather service said.
The agency said strong breaking waves and longshore and rip currents will make swimming difficult and dangerous.
Volunteers round up fans to cool Kauai school
LIHUE >> Students are helping cool hot classrooms by replicating a Big Island fan drive for Kekaha Elementary School.
A dozen fans were donated Saturday during the drive outside a Safeway store, the Garden Island newspaper reported.
Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama student Marley Samio was aided by fellow student Trajan Satta-Ellis of Kona, Hawaii island, and Waimea (Kauai) High School student Naikoa Simao.
Samio said Satta-Ellis’ previous fan drive inspired her to pursue a similar event as a project for her personal-health class.
“Trajan did a drive in Kona to get fans for the schools there,” Samio said. “He collected 10 fans and about $100 to purchase fans. He wanted to come and help me with the Kekaha School fans.”
Kekaha has about 20 classrooms. Principal Dominic Beralas said teachers have taken temperature readings in classrooms that were as hot as 90 degrees. In one class it neared 100 degrees.
“I haven’t seen anything like this,” Beralas said. “Even people who aren’t from here are stopping to help our teachers and students.”
