Rigo Sanchez’s academic interest as a psychology major connects with his on-field duties with the Rainbow Warrior football team.
"The whole kicking deal … a lot of it is mental," Sanchez said. "It all kind of ties in."
Sanchez was locked in last Saturday, providing one of the few bright spots in UH’s lopsided loss to Air Force. Sanchez was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week after averaging 52 yards on his seven punts. Four of his punts stopped inside the Air Force 20 and he set a season-high with a 73-yard kick in the fourth quarter. He also had two kicks of 53 yards and another going for 56.
"It was definitely an honor, but I couldn’t do that without everybody else," he said.
Sanchez was also among eight players named captains this week.
Sanchez’s 44.9-yard season average ranks 12th in the FBS and third in the Mountain West Conference. His 73-yard kick is tied for the longest in the MWC this season.
