Parking rates at airports across Hawaii will be going up starting Dec. 1.
At five airports, including Honolulu Airport (HNL), the daily maximum rate to park will increase by $3, according to the state Department of Transportation.
For HNL that means it will cost $18 to park 24 hours there. For Kahului (OGG), Kapalua Airport (JHM), Lihue (LIH), Hilo (ITO) and Kailua-Kona (KOA), it will cost $15, according to a DOT statement.
The short-term rates to park at those airports for less than four hours won’t change, according to DOT. The rate for the fourth hour will increase by $3 at HNL and $2 at the neighbor island airports.
It’s the first time in four years that state officials have hiked prices at the airports, which help fund a statewide airport system that doesn’t rely on any income or state taxes to help support its operations, the DOT statement added.
From July 2014 to June the state airport system had $344 million in total revenues, including $22.5 million in parking receipts, according to DOT spokesman Tim Sakahara. That $22.5 million in parking represented 6.5 percent of airport revenues.
Additionally, HNL’s economy lot, which is near the commuter terminal where Mokulele Airlines operates, will also increase by $3 to a total of $15 for its daily maximum rate, Sakahara said Monday.
For comparison, the daily maximum parking rates at the main terminals at Los Angeles International Airport and San Francisco International Airport are $30 and $36, respectively. San Francisco also has long-term economy parking that’s listed at $18 a day, and LAX has an economy lot that’s listed at $12 a day, according to the airports’ websites.
